D&C 109 The Dedication of the Kirtland Temple

"Joseph received the word of the Lord for him to take his two counselors, Frederick G. Williams and Sidney Rigdon and come before the Lord and He would show them the plan. We went upon our knees, called on the Lord, and the Kirtland Temple appeared within viewing distance. All of us viewed it together. After we had taken a good look at the exterior, the building seemed to come right over us.” (Truman O. Angell, Autobiography ( ) in “His Journal,” Our Pioneer Heritage 10 (1967):

When the Prophet Joseph Smith learned that the architect Artemus Millet was not yet a member of the Church, he sent Brigham Young on a special mission to baptize him. Brother Millet was baptized and accepted the call to be the master builder of the temple. He asked the Saints for precious china and glassware to grind into the plaster (Brother Millet would not share the formula for the plaster with anyone, explaining that it had been revealed to him by the Lord). Brother Millet also contributed in the building of the Nauvoo Temple, and the St. George and Manti Temples in Utah. He died in the faith in Scipio, Utah, on 19 November (CHFT, 164).

FACTS The Dedication of the Kirtland Temple

 The Kirtland Temple cost around $70,000 and took about three years to build.  The saints still owed $13,000 on the temple at the day of dedication and took collections at the door.  $1,000 was raised on that day.  About 800 saints were turned away and went to the school house and had a meeting of their own.

 Frazier Eaton, who had previously donated $ was not allowed in the temple because of the lack of seating. He felt his contribution to the temple should have assure him a seat and later left the church because of it.  The “Spirit of God” was sung and is now sung at every temple dedication.  The service lasted 7 hours  and no one left.

 Frederick G. Williams said he saw the Savior.  The Apostle Peter came and sat by Joseph Smith Sr.  Joseph Smith Jr. blessed the congregation and concluded with the Hosanna Shout.  Later that evening 416 priesthood holders gathered back to the temple

THE DEDCICATION SERVICES The Kirtland Temple

“The veil is very thin in the temples, especially when we join in worshiping through music. In dedicatory sessions featuring beautiful and well-trained choirs of about thirty voices, there are times when I have heard what seemed to be ten times thirty voices praising God with a quality and intensity of feeling that can be experienced but not explained.” (Elder Oaks, October 1994, 11).

“That evening over four hundred priesthood bearers met in the temple. While George A. Smith was speaking, a noise was heard like the sound of a rushing mighty wind which filled the Temple, and all the congregation simultaneously arose, being moved upon by an invisible power; many began to speak in tongues and prophesy; others saw glorious visions; and I beheld the Temple was filled with angels. David Whitmer bore testimony that he saw three angels passing up the south aisle. The people of the neighborhood came running together, hearing an unusual sound within, and seeing a bright light like a pillar of fire resting upon the Temple. Others saw angels hovering over the temple and heard heavenly singing” (CHFT, 166-7).
