Auditorium Class Fall 2013

I Thessalonians 5:1-22

5:1-11 Paul was confident that the Thessalonian brethren understood about the day of the Lord and that they were not in darkness for that day to overtake them as a thief. Darkness is a time for sleep and for drunkenness. But those of the day should be sober, wearing a breastplate of faith and love and for a helmet the hope of salvation. To what day does Paul refer? How could they be ready for this day?

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5: Paul gives these brethren a list of exhortations, including the plea to know and esteem those that have the rule over them. To whom does Paul refer in verses 12-13? How do verses describe those under consideration?

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:1-11 The Lord’s second coming. Hebrews 9:28  The term “day of the Lord” can describe a time of God’s judgment. Examine the context to identify what kind of judgment. o The OT Prophets would describe a time of physical destruction as a “day of the Lord” (Example, Joel 2:1- 11, 25) o In 1 Thessalonians 4-5, Paul describes a time when the Lord will descend from heaven and the dead will be raised. 1 Thessalonians 4:14, 16

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:1-11 The Lord’s second coming. Hebrews 9:28  The day of the Lord will come. 1 Thessalonians 5:2, 2 Peter 3:8-10 o At Jesus’ second coming, the earth will not remain for Him to reign on it for 1000 years. The earth will be burned up. o The world didn’t end in AD70. When the Lord returns, the dead will be raised (1 Thess 4) and the earth will be burned up (2 Peter 3). Those things have not yet happened.

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:1-11 The Lord’s second coming. Hebrews 9:28  The Lord’s coming will be unannounced. 1 Thessalonians 5:2, 2 Peter 3:10, Matthew 24:36, 44 o Note that some of the events described in Matthew 24 would be “announced,” it would be known when they were imminent. Matthew 24:14, 15, 16, o The events that could be seen then would allow them to escape. Matthew 24:16 o The end in Matthew 24:14 has nothing to do with the day of the Lord in 1 Thessalonians 4-5. We cannot escape the day of 1 Thessalonians Thessalonians 5:3-4

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations Who do we know that would be “over” brethren in a local congregation?  Elders are “over” us in the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 5:12 o Elders are “overseers” of a flock Acts 20:17, 28 o Elders have “oversight” of a flock among them 1 Peter 5:1- 2 o Elders take care of the church of God 1 Timothy 3:5  Respect and appreciate them for their work. o labour, work 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 o good work 1 Timothy 3:1

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations  Warn them (admonish, to put in mind) that are unruly (disorderly, out of rank). 1 Thessalonians 5:14 o Later, some were not working 2 Thessalonians 3: o Love speaks about important things. Acts 20:26-31

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations  Comfort the feebleminded (faint hearted, “little spirited”). 1 Thessalonians 5:14 o We can become weary and faint in mind. Hebrews 12:3 o “I alone am left” – you are not alone. I Kings 19:13- 14, 18 o Remember Jesus and what he went through. John 16:33

In the movie “Field of Dreams” the voice would say, “go the distance.” o Bearing mistreatment. Titus 3:2-3, Philippians 4:5 o Willing to continue to teach. 2 Timothy 4:2-3

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations  See that none render evil for evil unto any man. 1 Thessalonians 5:15 o Don’t avenge yourself. I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations  Rejoice evermore (at all times). 1 Thessalonians 5:16 Can we “rejoice” even in hard times? We can choose to be glad with a specific reason in mind. o When beaten, they rejoiced that they were worthy to suffer shame. Acts 5:40-42 o When others rejoice. Romans 12:15 o Rejoice in the Lord. Philippians 4:4, John 14:1-3

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations  Pray without ceasing (without intermission, incessantly). 1 Thessalonians 5:17 o Don’t stop praying. 1 Samuel 12:23 o We don’t decide to stop praying for a season (reference concept in 1 Corinthians 7:5).  I’ve got this project going on at work, so I’ll stop praying for a few weeks while I concentrate on my project. o Example of David, Daniel. Psalm 55:17, Daniel 6:10

I Thessalonians 5:1-22 5:12-22 Exhortations  In every thing give thanks. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 o Did Paul stop giving thanks to God during his times of persecution? 2 Corinthians 12:24-28, Acts 27:33-36 o And be ye thankful. Colossians 3:15
