The Moon as basis for determining the year.

Psalm 104:19 says “He made the moon for the seasons; the sun knows the place of its setting.” Since the calendar is based on the moon cycle, the arrival of the new moon is a crucial event. In ancient times three witnesses were needed to confirm when the first sliver of the moon was visible. At that time a fire was lit on the Mount of Olives to signal others watching to light fires on the surrounding hills until the message was spread throughout Yisra’el that a new month had begun.

Generally, it is only seen for a short time after sunset, as the sky becomes fairly dark. The moment of seeing the New Moon marks the beginning of the first day of the new month. This explains the Jewish custom of counting days from dusk to dusk (Lev 23:32). Using any other time would result in confusion about whether that day was the last day of the old month or the first day of the new month. As the average lunar cycle is about four weeks and one and a half days long, the Annual Holy Days, such as Passover, fall on different days of the week from year to year. Lev 23:10-14 shows that the month of Aviv always coincides with the beginning of the year's harvest in Yisra’el. According to verse 14 they are not allowed to begin eating the new season's harvest until the wave sheaf has been offered on the Sunday during the Week of Unleavened Bread. (ie- the Wave Offering) Thus we can see that this calendar is based on both an annual solar cycle, which is controlled by the ripening of the winter barley crops and a monthly cycle determined by the moon. There is no record of the 7-day week cycle ever having been broken. Calendar changes and reform have never interrupted the 7-day cycles. It is very likely that the week cycles have run uninterrupted at least since the days of Moshe, possibly even longer.

God’s Appointed Times

In Leviticus 23, God calls the feasts “My appointed times”. The feasts are God’s way to remind His people that He is Lord of the calendar, King of creation, Ruler over time, past, present, and future. He established special times to meet with us in a particular way to commemorate events in His dealings with man. When we celebrate the feasts in the way He ordained, we reinforce the relationship He established with us and honor His sovereignty over us.

The timing of the feasts is important...God is very specific on when we are to celebrate these events. Lev 23:4 … “which you shall proclaim in their appointed seasons:” 1. Because of the harvests.. 2. Because of Spiritual meaning 3. Because of prophecy.

Shabbat

Exo 35:2 Work shall be done six days, but the seventh day shall be separated for you, a rest of Sabbath observance unto hwhy. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. Lev 23:3 …a set apart convocation.

The feasts will point to the Messiah and God's plan for the world through the Messiah (Ps 40:6-8; Hebrews 10:7).

Yeshua (Jesus) came to fulfill all that was written in the (Tanach), which consists of three parts: the Torah, the prophets (Nevi'im), and the writings (Ketuvim – personified by the Psalms) concerning Him (Luk 24:26-27,44-45; Yog 5:46-47). 7. Lev 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread unto hwhy ; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. Lev 23:7 On the first day you shall have a set apart convocation; you shall do no labor of work. Lev 23:8 And you shall offer an offering by fire unto hwhy for seven days; and the seventh day shall be a set apart convocation; you shall do no labor of work.

Wave Offering

Lev 23:10 Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and say to them: When you come into the land which I am giving to you, and have reaped its harvest, and have brought a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest; Lev 23:11 he shall wave the sheaf before hwhy, to be accepted for you; on the day after the Shabbat the priest shall wave it.

Day of the Shofar

Lev 23:24 Speak to the children of Yisra’el, saying: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a Shabbat observance, a memorial of shouting with trumpet blasts, a set apart convocation. Lev 23:25 You shall do no labor of work; and you shall offer an offering by fire unto hwhy.

Yum Kippur

Lev 23:27 Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be a Day of Atonement. It shall be a set apart convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and bring an offering by fire unto hwhy. Lev 23:31 You shall do no work; it shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings. Lev 23:32 It shall be to you a Shabbat observance of rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall observe your Shabbat.

Sukkot

Lev 23:39 Also on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the crops of the land, you shall keep the feast of hwh y for seven days; on the first day there shall be a Shabbat observance, and on the eighth day a Shabbat observance. Lev 23:40 And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of majestic trees, branches of palm trees, the boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before Jehovah your God for seven days. Lev 23:41 You shall hold it as a feast unto hwh y for seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations. You shall hold it in the seventh month.

The eighth day is called The Last Great day of hwhy

These are the only God ordained feasts. All others are traditional and National feasts.

Dates and times

On 04/04/2011 there is a slim chance that the moon will be seen just before going down at 18:03 but because of the closeness to the sun rather on 05 / 04 / On the 5th – in the morning, the sun rises at about 06:00 and the moon at 07:45 – most likely too light to see – still possible. In the evening the moon will be visible from 17:00 or earlier untill 18:25. Aviv 1 (Nisan 1) starts on 5th April evening and thus on 6th it is Aviv 1
