1. The Value of Your Professional Experience 2. Qualities of Excellent Student Teacher Supervisors Deeply dedicated to the teaching profession. Possess keen observational skills, mentoring and coaching skills, active listening skills, and direct communication skills. Guardians of the teaching profession; hold student teachers to the highest standards of performance for the sake of the children they teach. To Prepare Quality Educators Knowledgeable of children/development, subject area specialists, engage students in meaningful learning, caring and insightful, etc… “Good Teaching…is Good Teaching…is Good Teaching” SAU’s Teacher Preparation Program (MDE & TEAC Approved) EDU 140: Exploring Critical Skills for the Professional Educator Foundations of American Education, Educational Psychology/Child Development, Diversity Components, Technology Integration, Content and Pedagogical Methods (2 courses), Reading/Literacy Strategies, Instructional, Classroom Management & Assessment Construction, along with all content specific coursework associated with their endorsement areas (Major or Minors). Purposes of Student Teaching

In order to be eligible as a student teacher candidates must: Have completed at least 120 hours of classroom observation/ participation (40 hours in methods related coursework). Maintained a minimum GPA of 2.7 (Most candidates have a GPA of 3.3 or above). Recommended to student teach by their subject area and education departments/professors and have not outstanding history of being in trouble with the university. Completed a criminal history background check & First Aid/CPR. Satisfactory completed any professional improvement plan designated for them. Must be approved by the School of Education Executive Team (E-Team). * Our goal is the put only the best in the classroom. Student Teaching Eligibility

The Director of Student Teaching or his/her designee: Meets with prospective student teachers well in advance of their planned student teaching semester. Interviews student teachers individually reviewing their student teaching application materials and discussing their student teaching placement options. Initiates a student teaching placement inquiry with appropriate personnel in schools or school districts. Communicates with the student teacher regarding placement progress and directs them to set up interviews with teachers/admin. Presents a student teaching placement confirmation form to the appropriate school personnel. Assigns a university supervisor(s) to the student teacher. Student Teaching Placement Process

10 Week: Elementary Placement with Additional: 8 Week Early Childhood Experience 10 Week Special Education Experience 15 Week: Elementary or Secondary Placement Endorsement Student Teaching Special Education (8 to 10 Weeks) Early Childhood (5 – 8 Weeks) Other Subject/Certification Specific (5 Weeks) Different Types of Student Teaching Experiences

Student Teacher, Classroom Teacher(s), & Building Administrator Refer to: Student Teacher Handbook, Overview of Student Teaching Placement Performance Responsibilities, Overview of Student Teaching Activities, Student Teacher Performance Indicators for Certification Recommendation Student Teacher – demonstrate satisfactory performance of all regular teaching duties and responsibilities. Classroom Teacher(s) – share their experience, support, and provide guidance and feedback to the student teacher helping them achieve the highest level of success (recommendation for certification). Building Administrator – support the teacher, student teacher, and ensure that quality learning is occurring in the classroom. Roles & Responsibilities

University Supervisor Refer to Student Teacher Handbook, Overview of Student Teaching Placement Performance Responsibilities, Overview of Student Teaching Activities, Student Teaching Professional Folder and the University Supervisor Checklist of Required Activities Review student teacher folder and initiate initial meeting Review weekly reflections, schedule, and daily journaling Make 4 lesson observations; complete both the midterm/final evaluation (Conference with Student Teacher) Make sure the teacher completes one lesson observation (using SAU form), midterm and final evaluation. (Conference with student Teacher – sign, date, make a copy of the evaluation for them). Make sure the student teacher completes notebook assignments Be available to questions and concerns of the student teacher, classroom teacher(s) or building administrator Write a letter of recommendation for the student teacher Complete MDE Survey Turn in the Professional Folder (Complete) with signed documents (checklist, expense report, etc.) Roles & Responsibilities EDU 100 or 140 Evaluation Initial meeting = 1 st week 1 st Lesson Observation = Week 3
