2010/11 Scottish Crime Survey

Various Types of Crime: Specific Examples Property crime involves stealing, dishonestly obtaining, or damaging another person’s property. Burglary, theft and car crime are examples of property crime Violent crimes is when the offender uses or threatens to use violence against a victim. Violent crimes include murder, manslaughter (culpable homicide in Scotland) assault and rape.

A ‘Public Order Crime’ is a crime that is committed against society as a whole, not against a specific person or group . Simply put, it is an act that disrupts the ‘norms’ of society. For example, many people were arrested for Public Order Offences’ during the London Riots of 2011. Here is a further, more recent e.g.: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/man-charged-with-public-order-offence-over-boat-race-incident-7627218.html

Another variety of public order crime is ‘anti-social behaviour’ such as: Rowdy, noisy behaviour in otherwise quiet neighbourhoods Night-time noise from houses or gardens, especially between 23:00 and 07:00 Threatening, drunken or "yobbish" behaviour Vandalism, graffiti and fly-posting Dealing or buying drugs on the street Litter and fly-tipping rubbish Aggressive begging Drinking in the street Setting off fireworks late at night Abandoning cars on the street

Corporate Crime is crime that takes place in the workplace Corporate Crime is crime that takes place in the workplace. Examples would be crimes against consumers/customers or using computers to hack into other people’s information. This may also include fraud such as tax avoidance or bogus insurance claims.

“Blue and White Collar Crime” We can separate crimes into two categories: ‘Blue-collar crime’ is any crime committed by an individual from a lower social class as opposed to ‘white collar crime’ which is associated with crime committed by individuals of a higher social class. So…for example car theft would be described as blue collar and corporate fraud would be white collar. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3102800.stm
