L.M.Montgomery Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in She died in 1942 aged 67. Her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, was published in 1908 when she was 34. It was her best selling book. Lucy was only 2 years old when her mother died. She was sent to live with her grandparents on Prince Edward Island. When she was older she became a teacher, but she left to take care of her grandmother, after her grandfather died.

Fashion 1908 The fashion in 1908 was long dresses with tight waists and puffy sleeves. Women liked to wear flat, extravagant hats. Lots of women had purses. Men wore smart suits and top hats. They also wore bow ties.

Pound Cakes It is a delightful, buttery sponge cake. It is traditionally made with a pound of sugar and a pond of butter. Anne’s cake went horribly wrong in the story. You need butter, sugar, eggs, self raising flour, plain flour, milk and vanilla extract.

Raspberry cordial Ingredients for a lovely raspberry cordial. Ingredients: Frozen raspberries, sugar, the juice of 2 lemons, 4 cups of boiling water.

Location The book is located on Prince Edward Island. It is surrounded by beautiful trees, blossoms and the glorious country side of America.

Anne Shirley Anne is a red head chatterbox. She's always longed for a family. She is skinny and has lots of freckles. She is a lovable child and got adopted by Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert at the age of eleven. She is a daydreamer and she adores nature.

Marilla Cuthbert Marilla is an organised and stern lady with a slight sense of humour. She is a ‘tall and thin woman with angles and without curves’. Her dark hair showed some grey streaks, which she always kept up in a bun behind her head. She has very thin lips.

Mathew Cuthbert Mathew is a shy man, who sometimes relies on his wife, Marilla. Mathew is scared of all woman around him apart from Marilla and Rachel. When he meets Anne he is terribly afraid but he knows Marilla will fix everything. Mathew never dresses extravagantly, but on this one occasion he wears a white collar and his best suit of clothes.

Rachel Lynde Rachel is a nosy, old goat and thinks that she knows everything, for instance when Marilla and Mathew are adopting a child she thinks it is a stupid idea. She is the local busybody and knows everything about everybody. She isn't afraid to share her opinions.

Life at Green Gables Green Gables is a farm and is used to plant lots of crops. There is also a brook round the back of Green Gable. Green Gables is in sweet little town called Avonlea. Everybody is friendly with one another and Green Gables is very peaceful.
