F UN FACT F RIDAY !!! NASA teamed up with Black and Decker to develop a cordless drill for taking core samples on the moon in ,800 people visit the E.R. each year for drill related injuries. (That is 16 injuries a day!) The first drilling tools trace back to the 33,000 B.C. These tools must have caused many blisters as they were spun by hand. There is a primate called a drill that is closely related to the baboon. It is Africa’s most endangered mammal, with possibly 3,000 left Electrical engineer and Scotsman Arthur James Arnot registered the first patent for an electrically powered drill on August 20 th, 1889, at the age of just 23.

W HAT IS A POWER DRILL ? A power tool that is typically operated with electricity and may be mounted or portable.

P ORTABLE POWER DRILLS 1/4 th, 3/8 th, and ½ inch is popular in agricultural businesses and farms The size of the drill refers to the maximum size bit shank the drill will hold. Can be used for drilling in wood, metal, plastic, masonry, and lots more Can have various attachments for activities such as: grinding, brushing, sanding, buffing, and polishing

T HE CHUCK A 3 jaw part that hold the bit A portable drill may be equipped with chucks that are tightened in four different ways: keyless, self tightening, geared key, hex key, and hand tightened.

Geared Key Chuck-A key is used to tighten the three jaws of the chuck quickly and uniformly. The bit is centered and gripped firmly in the process Hex key chuck- A small hex key wrench is used to tighten the chuck

METAL When drilling holes in Steel, iron, and aluminum, use a lubricant. A light weight oil for engines is suitable If drilling brass, using a lubricant is not necessary.

S AFETY IS IMPORTANT IN THE USE OF ALL DRILLS ! When a power drill comes from the factory, it is insulated so that the operator is not shocked when using it. However, if this insulation breaks, the current will pass through the operator if the drill is not grounded. When available, double insulated tools should be selected Use care in operating a portable drill Do not drop the drill on the feet or allow the drill bit to touch any part of the body A turning bit will easily break the skin or quickly become entangled in clothing.

S AFETY IS IMPORTANT IN THE USE OF ALL DRILLS ! A brush is used to remove the sharp metal drill chips, and can penetrate the skin easily. Check before starting to drill to be sure the chuck key has been removed. Use vise or clamps to hold small parts being drilled so that they do not spin around and cause injury. Avoid forcing a drill Wear safety glasses to prevent flying chips from becoming lodged in the eyes.

O PERATING P RECAUTIONS Never wear a tie or loose clothing or jewelry when using a portable power drill. Tie long hair back Always wear safety glasses Do not operate in the presence of flammable fumes Avoid using a portable electric drill when it is raining or in wet conditions Use the correct bit for the type of material Make sure the power switch is off before plugging in or inserting the battery Make all adjustments in the off position and unplugged

O PERATING P RECAUTIONS Insert bit into the drill chuck and tighten with the chuck key. Remove the key from the drill chuck before starting the portable drill Keep your hands and fingers away from the rotating drill chuck and the bit Do not force the drill bit Never carry the power drill by the power cord Never stop the rotation of the drill chuck or bit with your hands or fingers Always clean your work area upon completion of the drilling task.
