To create a living graph on the Reformation. To explain why England left the Roman Catholic Church. Gwaith Dosbarth Tachwedd

What did People believe at the Start of the 16 th Century? If you died with a dirty Soul you would go to either Purgatory or straight to hell. You had to go to Church and get the Priest to clean your Soul. If you died with a clean Soul you would go to heaven.

What did People believe at the Start of the 16 th Century? If you went on a Crusade or a Pilgrimage you could earn time out of Purgatory You could buy a special letter from the Pope called an Indulgence which was like a get out of jail for free card but for Purgatory.

Definition Reformation – Changing/reforming religion in a country

In 1500 there was only Christian church in Western Europe – the Catholic Church. Its leader was the Pope. He was a powerful man, with great wealth and even his own army. He was based in Rome, Italy. But not everybody was happy with how the Catholic Church was being run. Soon there would be major protests which would lead to the Church being split in two…

Who was Martin Luther? He could read Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Whilst comparing the Latin Catholic Bible with the original Greek & Hebrew he found that certain parts were incorrectly translated. Luther hung his research on the local Church door in Wittenburg in He disagreed with the Pope and began the protestant religion.

You Don’t have to go to Church to get your soul cleaned. The Church is wrong to sell indulgencies which buy time out of Purgatory. Read the Bible in your own language and not Latin. Its wrong to make an image of God. The Church is too rich. What did Martin Luther Believe?

Girls were allowed to succeed but the two previous times that this had happened in England had brought about trouble and warfare - this is what Henry feared. He wanted the Kingdom to be secure after he had gone, and wanted the Tudor legacy to continue. His son Edward was King after him, even though he was only nine when he became king. Did you know ? The rule of the Crown passing to boys first still exists today - Prince Charles will receive the crown after our current Queen, then his sons William and Harry, even though there are females within the royal family who are older. Henry had got Anne Boleyn pregnant, while he was married to Catherine of Aragon. His astrologer told him that the baby would be a boy so he divorced Catherine and then married Anne Boleyn only to find that it was a healthy girl!

Question 1 Who told Henry that his baby with Anne Boleyn would be a boy ? Answer = His astrologer

Question 2 What was the name of Henry's only son ? Answer = Edward

Question 3 When Anne Boleyn became pregnant with Henry's son who was Henry currently married to ? Answer = Catherine of Aragon

Question 4 How old was Edward ( Henry’s son ) when he became king ? Answer = 9 years old

Exemption from Pope Julius II Henry even came to believe that his union with Catherine, who had many miscarriages and stillbirths, had been cursed by God, because Catherine had first been the wife of his brother, Arthur. Henry’s father, Henry VII, had betrothed Because marriage to the wife of one’s brother was prohibited by both canon and biblical law (see Leviticus 18:16, 20:21), the marriage had required a special exemption from Pope Julius II.

The King’s Affair By 1527, Henry was thoroughly besotted of Anne Boleyn, one of Catherine’s ladies in waiting. He was determined to put Catherine aside and take Anne as his wife. When the king’s advisors could not obtain a papal annulment from the Pope, they conceived of a plan to declare the king supreme in English spiritual affairs. In January 1533, Henry wed the pregnant Anne Boleyn, with Thomas Cranmer officiating.

So why might Henry VIII have been interested in the Reformation? Protestant churches were not under the control of the Pope. The ruler of each state had control of their own church. Why might this have interested Henry VIII?

Your Grace, Catherine is not able to produce a male heir. I believe the marriage is blighted in the eyes of God as she was my late brothers wife and it was therefore against Biblical Teachings for me to marry her. I would ask your Excellency to grant and annulment so that I may rid myself of this curse. Best Regards Henry
