Comparative study of differently treated (cooked and bleached) industrial grass and straw fibres, respectively, by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy István LELE, a Mariann LELE, a András VÍG, b Zsolt JANOWSZKY c and János JANOWSZKY c a University of West Hungary, Faculty of Wood Sciences, Paper Research Institute, 9400 Sopron, Bajcsy-Zs. u. 4, Hungary b Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology, 1521 Budapest, Hungary c Greenline Hungary Ltd, 5540 Szarvas, Hungary

According to the SEM pictures surface roughness of both fibres has increased after bleaching. SEM pictures of straw fibres without and with bleaching, respectively

AFM pictures of straw fibres without and with bleaching, respectively Also according to the AFM pictures can be concluded that surface roughness of both fibres has increased after bleaching. The gained surface characteristics elucidated the differences between the two studied fibres and enabled the optimisation of fibre–fibre interaction during the sheet making process.
