What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane A wind vane tells you which way the wind is blowing I’m going to show you how to make a wind vane! What does a wind vane do?

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane First you need two pieces of card. Out of one you cut an arrow shape. Use your scissors carefully!

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane Draw round your arrow on the other piece of card. Now cut out the second arrow with scissors.

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane Now you need an empty plastic bottle with a hole in the lid. You also need some glue, a straw and some masking tape.

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane Tape the straw to the arrow. Make sure the arrow balances on the straw like a seesaw. This is the hardest part! Then glue the two arrows together so they sandwich the straw.

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane Put some water in the bottle to stop it blowing over. Then push the end of the straw through the hole in the lid. Stick four pieces of masking tape on the bottle marked with N, E, S and W.

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane Take the wind vane outside and use a compass to make sure it is set up in the right direction. The arrow will point to where the wind is coming from!

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a wind vane South North East West NWNE SW SE Here, the wind is coming from the south. You can record the class results on this chart which is called a Wind Rose. What does this mean? What about NE, NW and SW? This PowerPoint and lesson are based on work by Ian Mitchell, The Green Egg Company, developed & edited by Amie Andrews for TLCP and Ali Ross, Sundog Energy.
