Procedure-Thermometer experiment BY LEIGH

Aim: To find out the differences of cold water and hot water.

Materials: The materials needed will be a glass bottle, some hot water, cold water, a tall clear tub, an oven mitt, some blue food colouring, some ice cubes, some modelling clay and a straw that you can see through.

Method/Steps 1.Pore your cold water into the glass bottle until the very top. Add some blue food colouring as well. 2.Cover the top of the bottle with modelling clay and poke the straw through so that the straw is in the bottle but also poking out just a little. 3.Pore the hot water into the tub until it is half full and then put the glass bottle in as well.

Result As you can see the water in the bottle is rising up the top of the straw. But when you put the bottle in a tub of ice it would be the opposite. The water will go back down the straw. If you want to do that use your oven mitt to remove the bottle and then replace the hot water with ice.

Conclusion This is happening because the clay seal up the top of the bottle. When the bottle thermometer sits in the hot water the molecules in the bottle starts to bounce around faster by the second. Because the clay seal stops air from moving in and out of the bottle the water can only go strait up the straw.
