Quadrilaterals By Mr. Bales

Objective By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify, describe, and classify quadrilaterals. Standard 4MG3.8 - Know the definitions of different quadrilaterals (rhombus, square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid).

Introduce Using the straws and tie wraps, you will be making shapes. Please follow the directions carefully. After each shape, we will take it apart before we begin the new one.

Shape #1 Using four straws of the same length, make a quadrilateral with all four sides equal in length and all right angles. What is this shape called? Now, pull two opposite corners of the square in opposite directions. Are the angles still right angles? Are the pairs of opposite sides still the same length? What is this new shape called?

Square vs. Rhombus A square has four right angles, with opposite sides parallel. All sides are equal length. A rhombus has 4 equal sides and opposite sides are parallel.

Shape #2 Now, use two straws of one length and two straws of another length. Make a quadrilateral with the pairs of opposite sides the same length and all right angles. What is this shape called? Pull two opposite corners of the shape in opposite directions. Are the angles still right angles? Are the pairs of opposite sides still the same length? What is the new shape called?

Rectangles vs. Parallelograms A rectangle has 4 right angles, with opposite sides equal and parallel. A parallelogram has opposite sides equal in length and parallel.

Shape #3 Using two straws of one length for the sides of the shape, and two completely different sized straws for the top and bottom, and make this quadrilateral. (So you should use 3 different straw lengths - same two sized for the sides - different one for top - and another different one for bottom. What quadrilateral is this?

Trapezoid A trapezoid has at least 1 pair of parallel sides.
