Structure of Lesson Strand- Interdisciplinary Learning Domain- Design, Creativity and Technology Dimensions- Investigating and Designing, Producing, Analysing and Evaluating. Level- 4 grades 5-6

Learning Outcomes Students will gain an understanding of the concepts of design/design briefs through the use of materials and systems. Develop techniques to create solutions to the required design brief. Analyse how products and systems function.

The Great Egg Drop Challenge »Your task is to create a craft that will protect your pilot when dropped from 4 metres high.

Price Check You have only $ to purchase the items you require from the Shop. The items are as follows: 1 Balloon$ Paper$ Straw$ Paper Clips$ Stick$ Cotton Ball$50.00 Sticky Tape$ String$ Pilot come FREE of Charge

The Shop!!! Note: At this point in the presentation the contents of the shop were discussed. The shop sold the following items: newspaper string sticky tape balloons straws cotton wool balls Paper Clips

Choose your design team of 2-4, teacher will decide and a construction inspector (leader) You will be given 5 minutes planning time to discuss and design your craft. You will be given a Purchase Card After planning time your team will be called to the shop to purchase your items. You will be given 20 minutes of construction time

At the end of your construction time, launching will commence at the designated launching pad (outside). Each team will be called up one at a time to the Launch Pad. The winning craft is the pilot that makes a safe landing (no damage or fine crack)

Designing Your designing time is 5mins During this time you need to consider the following: –Money –Time –Safety features of your pilot

Creating Your creating time is 10mins During this time you need to consider the following: –Your pilot needs to be inside the capsule –All materials must be used

You now need to select one group member, from your group to come and discuss your capsule. This would include: –How you made it eg: the materials that you used, and why? –Pilots name? –What you think will happen (hypothesis)?

Launching Time Now for the real test………… Colin will now individually, one at a time, perform the “Worlds Greatest Egg Drop.”

Evaluation As a group you now need to get back together and discus the results of your drop… When doing this you need to consider: What happened? Why it happened (reflect on design)? How would you change it and why?
