Drawings – shows the appearance Geometry - understanding of form Arithmetic - measurements are computed Optics - lighting both interior exterior History - symbolic and spiritual level Philosophy - attitude of high mindedness Physics - management of structure Music - harmonic intervals Medicine - climate and relative healthiness Law - contractual relation Astronomy - determining the height spacing and orientations Marcus Vitruvius Pollio Known as VITRUVIUS The first written job description on systematic architecture

VITRUVIUS defined SIX Fundamental Principles Symmetry Arrangement Economy Propriety Eurythmy Order

VITRUVIUS defined SIX Fundamental Principles Symmetry Arrangement : It is a process of placing all the defined elements in correct functional relationships, never losing sight of overall “elegance of effect” It includes Ground plan, Elevation & Perspective. Today section & detail are added. Economy Propriety Eurythmy : It refers to the harmonious proportionality. Pleasing relationship between length, width & height. Order : It is a element of a work separately and as a whole. The basis of order is the program, which clearly outline the quantities required & selection of modules from the elements of the work itself.

VITRUVIUS defined SIX Fundamental Principles Propriety : It is the perfection of form which attained when a building is constructed on the basis of sound principles. For Vitruvius these were symbolic as well as practical.

Doric Ionic Corinthian Doric order was used for temples of masculine expression of strength Corinthians order with slender figures & leaves for feminine goddesses Ionic order constitutes an appropriate combination of severity of Doric & delicacy of Corinthian

VITRUVIUS defined SIX Fundamental Principles Symmetry : It is the achievement of a successful balance among the individual Elements of work & relationship between different parts Economy : Requires the effective management of materials & the site, maintaining a balance between cost & common sense during the construction process. Propriety : It is the perfection of form which attained when a building is constructed on the basis of sound principles. For Vitruvius these were symbolic as well as practical.
