Anticipatory Set: Complete “Have you Ever?” handout by answering yes or no to each question. Answer the questions honestly as your responses will be kept confidential. Remember you do not have to write your name on this sheet.

Objectives: Explore your own attitudes about, and experiences with, prejudice and bias Think critically and create examples of prejudiced attitudes, prejudice, discrimination, violence, and genocide Learn that violence and genocide result from a continuum that begins with prejudiced attitudes.

Something to think about… “The Holocaust began when the first racial or ethnic joke was ever told.”

Let’s begin… Read story “A Case Study to Consider.” As you read, think about the ways the situation escalated. Could something like this happen in our schools?

The Pyramid of Hate What is it? How can it connect to the case study?

The Pyramid of Hate

Genocide Genocide as defined by the United Nations in 1948 means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, including Killing members of the group Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Closure: JQ Something to think about again… “The Holocaust began when the first racial or ethnic joke was ever told.” What does this quote mean? Explain your answer using information learned from the Pyramid of Hate. How might we stop this type of escalation of the Pyramid of Hate?
