SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

WHAT IS SEL? SEL includes the processes through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

SO WHAT IS SEL? SEL is based on the understanding that the best learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships that make learning challenging, engaging and meaningful.

SO WHAT IS SEL? The development of SEL skills and competence is a parallel process for students, teachers, mentors, and administrators.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES Kindness Empathy Compassion Gratitude Forgiveness Mindfulness Hardwiring Happiness Sense of Purpose

LOOK OUT FOR NUMBER ONE

SURVIVAL OF THE KINDEST

WHAT IS ALTRUISM? Altruism is when we act to promote someone else’s welfare, even at a risk or cost to ourselves. Though some believe that humans are fundamentally self- interested, recent research suggests otherwise: Studies have found that people’s first impulse is to cooperate rather than compete ; that toddlers spontaneously help people in need out of a genuine concern for their welfare ; and that even non-human primates display altruism.

TEACH & MODEL THE BEHAVIORS THAT WE WANT TO SEE If we want to see it, we have to teach it, model it, give opportunities to experience it.

TEACH & MODEL THE BEHAVIORS THAT WE WANT TO SEE How can they be “random” acts of kindness if you’re making us do them?

PROMOTING KINDNESS

PRO-KINDNESS ACTIVITY-- HAPPINESS SPRINKLING PROJECT

HAPPINESS SPRINKLING PROJECT

WHY IS THIS PRO-KINDNESS STUFF SO IMPORTANT TO SCHOOL SAFETY? “Men hate each other because they fear each other, and they fear each other because they don't know each other, and they don't know each other because they are often separated from each other. ” --Martin Luther King Jr.

PRO-EMPATHY AND COMPASSION EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES SYNERGY DAYS!

COMPASSION GAMES

COMPASSION IN ACTION

IT’S UP TO US… to create the climate we wish to see and to be the change we wish to be.
