Spiritual Gifts – Acts II Lessons 7, 12, 13 and 14 Nürnberg, 17 Sept 2011

CHAPTER 7 WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, AND DISCERNING OF SPIRITS

Word of Wisdom The Greek word for “wisdom”, standard one, sophia. “Wisdom” means “understanding of what is true, right, or lasting; insight;... Common sense; good judgment.” How to make good decisions, insight, judgment “word,” or a portion, of wisdom. Greek for “word” is logos: thought or utterance

The word of wisdom is the supernatural gift of a portion of divine insight, judgment, or guidance for a particular need.

Examples Paul’s voyage to Rome, warning to stay Paul’s impression to go to Macedonia

Word of Knowledge Greek for “knowledge” is the standard one, gnosis. “Knowledge” means “familiarity, awareness, or understanding gained through experience or study;... the sum or range of what has been perceived, discovered, or learned.” Revelation of divine information to someone who does not know it by natural means. Supernatural gift of a portion of divine information for a particular need.

Example Acts 5:1-10 provides an example of this gift: “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds … But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?

Application Praying for needs, God can reveal the nature of the need to minister to the recipient

Discerning of Spirits I Corinthians 12:10 lists the gift of “discerning of spirits.” Disclosure from God but not a revelation of all the mind of God. Not a general gift … specifically a discerning of spirits. The word “discernment” means “keenness of insight and judgment.” It refers to the ability to make a proper distinction or determination, such as to know truth from error. There are three possible sources of a spiritual activity: – God and His angels, – the devil and his demons, – human spirit. Through discerning of spirits, we can determine which one has motivated a certain action, and what type.

…Slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, ‘These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.’ And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And he came out that very hour” (Acts 16:16-18).

Human, Other While the devil tempts us to sin and takes full advantage of wrong decisions and actions, human sin is primarily the result of the sinful human nature, human lusts, and human choices. (See Romans 3:9-12; James 1:14-15.) Many problems or mistakes do not come directly from the devil but from the human spirit.

The gifts of revelation are potentially available to every Spirit-filled believer. We would expect these gifts to be most valuable to those in spiritual leadership

CHAPTER 12 TONGUES AND INTERPRETATION

The Tongue Greek: Glossa – member of body >> language With the speaking gifts, God anoints people to communicate thoughts from His mind to the church. The speakers proclaim words of “edification and exhortation and comfort to men” (I Corinthians 14:3).

Tongues “If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful” (I Corinthians 14:14). Different kinds of tongues: we all speak differently Languages: – Used in the world today – One that is extinct – Presumably also a unique language created by God

The gift of tongues is the gift of a supernatural utterance in one or more languages unknown to the speaker Purposes: – Initial sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit** – Personal devotions – Public utterance to be interpreted For all believers!! I Corinthians (that speaking in tongues must be regulated in certain ways) refers only to Gift of Tongues **not technically gift of tongues, but gift of the Holy Spirit

Private Edification Several times I Corinthians 14 refers to this use of tongues and encourages it: – “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.... I wish you all spoke with tongues” (I Corinthians 14:4-5). The Bible encourages all believers to speak in tongues (blesses the individual) – “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the result then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding” (I Corinthians 14:14-15). Continue to speak in tongues throughout our lives.

Public Utterance “Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret” (I Corinthians 14:12-13). The purpose is to bless the entire congregation. Spectacular and miraculous Often convincing to the non-believer

Public Utterance “If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three…” (I Corinthians 14:27- 28) These guidelines apply when someone speaks to the church in tongues. If nobody interprets the words, the speaker should not continue on and on, but speak to himself and to God. – Tongue is for his benefit alone – Someone whom God wishes to use for the interpretation has not fully yielded to Him

Some argue from this passage that no one should ever speak in tongues in a church service without an interpretation (not even when everyone praises God or prays together). Then, everyone speaks for his own personal benefit, just as if he were alone. No one is capturing the attention of the congregation. Lack of an interpretation can still yield results

Interpretation “Interpretation” is hermeneia, >> hermeneutics Supernatural ability to translate or explain the meaning of a public utterance in tongues. God gives interpretations according to the speaker’s mental ability, understanding, and expectation (Vocabulary, accent, grammar) – so do not discount based on speech! Some initially receive an idea, word, phrase, or even a picture, others just utter forth the words

CHAPTER 13 PROPHESY

Defined Greek verb propheteuo is “to speak under inspiration” (Strong). Since God often revealed the future through the biblical prophets, the verb acquired the secondary meaning of “to foretell events.” English: – “to reveal by divine inspiration” – “to predict with certainty as if by divine inspiration.”

Prophesy Generally all speech anointed by God is prophecy. Encompasses preaching, praising, and testifying. Prediction of the future is not a requirement I Corinthians 12:4-11: there is a specific gift of prophecy that not everyone exercises.

Prophecy is the gift of a supernatural utterance directly from God in the language of the speaker and hearers

___________________ is the gift of a supernatural __________________ directly from God in the _________________________of the speaker and hearers. _____________________ ist die Gabe einer übernatürlichen _____________________ direkt von Gott in der _____________________ des Sprechers und der Zuhörer.

Someone who gives prophesy = prophet Can be for a given situation only Someone who gives a prophecy is not necessarily a permanent prophet in terms of the fivefold ministry of Ephesians 4:11-16

Working of Prophesy A preacher may speak prophetically in the midst of a sermon. Every anointed preacher prophesies when he preaches, but sometimes during the course of his message God will give him a direct word for the church or for certain individuals. Someone in the congregation may address the congregation with a public utterance in the known language, much like the interpretation of tongues. Sometimes, God will anoint one individual to give a prophecy to another.

Application of Prophesy Only the recipients of a prophecy can decide what it means for them. Discern whether a prophecy is of God, and if it is, how that prophecy applies to them. “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge” (I Corinthians 14:29). Primary purpose of the spiritual gifts is not to become an authority in someone’s life or to reveal the will of God that would otherwise remain unknown. Spiritual gifts are part of the process of edification and confirmation. The one who prophesies must be careful not to let his own assumptions color the prophecy and not to jump to conclusions

Prophecies are not infallible like the Bible
