Problems in Research

Self-fulfilling prophecy When a researcher’s expectations about a person or their experiment actually impact the person’s behavior or experiment Usually we are not aware of it As researchers, we must take steps to avoid it

Experiment types Single-blind experiment: participants are unaware of who received treatment But the researcher still knows Double-blind experiment: neither the experimenter nor the participants know who received treatment Removes bias from both sides

The Placebo Effect A change in a person’s behavior as a result of believing the treatment will work A positive effect after treatment without receiving anything They don’t actually receive anything that helps the behavior It’s all in the mind!

1.What type of research method was used in the study? 2.Based on the research method, what might skew data? 3.How did parents’ beliefs about their children affect their children’s behavior? 4.How is this study an example of a self-fulfilling prophecy? 5.Why is it important to avoid a self-fulfilling prophecy as researchers? 6.Do you believe self-fulfilling prophecies exist? Why or why not?

Proposal ONE paragraph, submitted electronically What you are researching Briefly describe your research topic How you will gather participants Who your participants will be What research method(s) you plan on using Why you are doing the study
