Questions to Think About… Why did Christ establish a Church? What is the Magisterium? What is an Ecumenical Council? What is Apostolic Succession?

Why did Christ establish a Church? By the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ established a Church, under Saint Peter and the Apostles so his Revelation could be preserved in its entirety and reach all nations without corruption.

What is an Ecumenical Council? An Ecumenical Council is a meeting at which bishops from around the world and convene to discuss and debate matters of concerns of concern to the whole Church

Who presides over an Ecumenical Council? The Pope or his Delegate presides. What issues did the Ecumenical Council address? They have addressed theological issues and matters of worship and Church discipline.

What is the Magisterium? It is the teaching office of the Church, protected by the Holy Spirit. It gives the Church the power to transmit Christ’s Gospels faithfully and correctly. It is infallible-The Church can not error in matters of Faith and morals. The Holy Spirit ensures it. The Apostles and their successors constitute the Magisterium.

What is the Deposit of Faith? It describes the whole content of the Divine Revelation. The twin sources of the Deposit of Faith are Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

What is Apostolic Succession? The office of Bishop has been passed along in an unbroken continuity from the Apostles through the history of the Church, even to the present day. Video: Why do we have a Pope?

Assignment Write a 1-2 page paper on one of the Ecumenical Councils and describe the issue, what was determined and the time it happened You may use the internet or books from the Library for your paper This will count as a test grade.

Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture

Questions to Think About… What is the relationship between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition? What is the relationship between Sacred Tradition and human traditions in the Catholic Faith? Where can Sacred Tradition be found? Is Sacred Scripture free from error? Why is Sacred Scripture sacred?

What is the difference between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition? Sacred Scripture is the part of Sacred Tradition that was written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Sacred Tradition encompasses the entire Deposit of Faith. Examples of Sacred Tradition are the Blessed Trinity and the Divinity of Christ, church liturgies, and the writings of the Church Fathers.

What is the relationship between Sacred Tradition and human traditions in the Catholic Faith? The Catholic Faith includes both Sacred, unchangeable tradition and human changeable traditions. The Church’s human traditions grow out of Sacred Tradition. Some human tradition in the Church are architectural forms and human artistic treasures.

What does it mean to say that God is the author of Sacred Scripture? God the Holy Spirit is the principal author. It is entrusted to the Church. The Holy Spirit simply did not assist the human writers but actually authored what they wrote. Inspiration is nothing less than divine authorship.

Is Sacred Scripture free from error? Yes, it has inerrancy because it teaches the truth without error. Its veracity and inerrancy are from God, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Whatever the sacred authors intended to affirm as true is true. The books of Scripture “firmly, faithfully, and without error teach that truth which God for the sake of salvation, wished to see confided to the Sacred Scripture.”

What literary forms are found in the Bible? One factor to understanding the Bible is the literary form in which a passage is written, for example: Law History Prophecy Apocalyptic Wisdom Literature Poetry Epistle

In what four senses may a scriptural passage be interpreted? Every passage of Scripture has a literal meaning. Many passages may also be read in a spiritual sense: allegorical, moral, or anagogical.

What global factors must be considered in interpreting the Bible? In interpreting Scriptures one must: Keep in mind the intention of the human and divine authors. The content and unity of the whole Scripture. The Tradition of the Church. The analogy of faith. Video: Is the Bible True?

Why is it wrong to impose modern standards of analysis on the books of the Bible? One might miss the sense was intended by the Holy Spirit and expressed by the Sacred Authors. Most of the books were written between two and four thousand years ago. The literary techniques are different then, that we think them to be.

Assignment Complete the graphic organizer using 5 different literary senses that the Bible uses, the definition of the literary sense, and a Biblical example of each. This assignment will count as a quiz grade.
