PALM SUNDAY

John 12:9-19: The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the L ORD ! Hail to the King of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said: “Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey’s colt.”

PALM SUNDAY EXPECTATIONS - what are the foundation?

PALM SUNDAY Our expectations can be all sorts of things. And sometimes what we expect is very different from what someone else expects, even if we call them the same thing.

PALM SUNDAY Jesus did not come to meet our expectations or those of his fellow early Jews. He came to meet our needs. (Bill Witherington)

PALM SUNDAY Zechariah 9:9-10 – written in 520BC; …Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt. 10 I will remove the battle chariots from Israel and the warhorses from Jerusalem. I will destroy all the weapons used in battle, and your king will bring peace to the nations...

PALM SUNDAY Psalm 118:26-28; Bless the one who comes in the name of the L ORD. We bless you from the house of the L ORD. 27 The L ORD is God, shining upon us. Take the sacrifice and bind it with cords on the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will praise you! You are my God, and I will exalt you!

PALM SUNDAY What are you expecting? What is it based on?

PALM SUNDAY ANSWERS – will they be as expected?

PALM SUNDAY David came as king, he heralded in the beginning of a stable nation. He fought enemies on all sides and established Israel among the nations. When Solomon came he gathered the riches of the world to himself and became one of the most powerful kings of the time. Jesus came from Nazareth, riding on a donkey!

PALM SUNDAY “we were all searching for a king to slay our foes and lift us high, you came a little baby thing, to make a woman cry” – George McDonald From womb to tomb, from birth to death, he did not come to meet our expectations of what a King should be like – he came to meet our deepest need - our need for salvation. He came to save us from ourselves.

PALM SUNDAY Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. (Colossians 2:8-10 – The Message)

PALM SUNDAY Whatever you are hoping, or expecting in the future, the past is finished. Whether you know it or not, Jesus is what you have been expecting. Palm Sunday warns us that there is Good Friday to come, But don’t be afraid, trust in Jesus, For Easter Sunday is on its way!
