Sewing Safety

It is very important that safety is observed when operating sewing machines and equipment.

Remember the following tips: Shears and scissors have sharp blades that can harm others when handled incorrectly. Remember the following tips: When passing scissors, offer them the handles. When you set your scissors down, you should close them so the edges aren’t exposed. Never horseplay with scissors

Pins Pins are used to hold objects in place. Use the following precautions when handling pins: Never place pins in your mouth, sleeve, or any other object other than a pin cushion. When stitching a pinned seam, be sure to stitch carefully. Should you puncture your skin, notify the teacher immediately.

Other Sharp Objects There are other sewing tools that have sharp points or edges. Use the following safety precautions: Only use tools for their intended purpose. When handling sharp objects, use them in the opposite direction. If an emergency arises, notify the teacher immediately.

Irons When ironing and pressing, be sure to use the following safety precautions: Keep your fingers and face away from the steam. When the iron is not in use, rest it on it’s heel. Be careful not to get anything caught in the cord and knock it over. Use the iron on an ironing board.

The Sewing Machine When you are just learning to operate the sewing machine, you should use a slow speed. Always sit directly in front of the sewing machine you are operating. Keep your fingers away from the needle. Only place your foot on the foot pedal when sewing. If you have a problem with the sewing machine, you should refer to the instruction manual. If the instruction manual is not available, do not attempt to solve the problem, ask your teacher.

Thank You!
