History of IB The International Baccalaureate® (IB) was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. A group of talented, forward-thinking teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools, created the IB Diploma Programme. What started life as a single programme for internationally mobile students preparing for university, has today grown into four programmes for students aged 3 to 19. IB is becoming increasingly popular to the alignment of Common Core in the United States.

IB: 4 Programmes – PYP, MYP, DP, and CC The IB Primary Years Programme for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. The IB Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world The IB Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19, is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and beyond. The IB Career-related Certificate for students aged 16 to 19, is the newest offering from the IB. The IBCC incorporates the vision and educational principles of the IB Programmes into a unique offering designed for students who wish to engage in career-related learning.

The Growth of IB in the last years – world-wide, US and Ohio IB is in approximately 3,500 schools/school districts in almost 150 countries IB is in approximately 1,500 schools/school districts in over 20 states in the US IB is in about 30 schools/school districts in Ohio

IB Vision/Mission The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB Student-Centered Goal IB presents students with a challenging and stimulating curriculum. IB emphasizes the philosophy of applied knowledge and the process of learning. IB involves students in an interdisciplinary education with “global” perspective. IB rewards students for being well-rounded and responsible citizens.

IB as an international instructional model? The IB continuum of international education is unique because of its academic and personal rigour, challenging students to excel in their studies and in their personal growth: 1. Interdisciplinary/ Inquiry based instruction: aligned with Common Core – critical thinking skills 2. Projects: Choose, reflect and act – multitasking and social skills 3. Research, literacy and writing skills in a 21 st century context: communication and tech skills
