AP Should I be or IB ?

All North Hills Students are IB students. IB Continuum School PYP (K-5) Exhibition MYP (6-10) Personal Project Extended Essay CAS Theory of Knowledge

All North Hills Students have the option to pursue the IB Diploma Must fulfill IB Diploma Requirements: CAS, TOK, EE 6 IBDP Courses (3 HL, 3 SL)

What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma?  Pre-university diploma  Utilizes international standards  Based on an integrated curriculum  Infused with internationalism

What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma? *International Admissions Credential *Over 3,289 IB authorized schools in 141 countries* *182 IB continuum schools in world, 24 in North America* *0.5% of Texas students take IB exams + * Source IB Website, Referenced 18 Oct 2011www.ibo.org + Source TEA Report on AP & IB Exam results,

The IB Diploma Is NOT a replacement for the North Hills Diploma.  Grades in NHP IB classes are not based upon grades on IB exams (though NHP grades should corollate with student preparedness for IB exams).  It is possible to get the NHP Diploma but not the IB Diploma (and vice-versa).

North Hills IB Diplomas  NHP IB Diploma pass rate—93%  Class of 2011 NHP IB Diploma pass rate—95%  Worldwide IB Diploma pass rate—79%*  Texas IB Diploma pass rate—67%*  —36% of NHP graduates have received the IB Diploma  Class of 2011—43% of senior class received the IB Diploma  NHP —40 senior Diploma Candidates and 58 junior Anticipated Candidates *Source—January 2010 IB Fact Sheet: Texas

North Hills students take both AP and IB courses.  Courses such as AP World History can be taken in 10 th grade.  IB Diploma courses begin in 11 th grade, with the IB exam being taken in May of the 12 th grade year.  AP courses often integrated with IB courses during the 11 th grade year, with students taking the AP exam in May of the 11 th grade year.

AP Compared to IB

Both AP & IB  Offer courses widely accepted for college credit.  Provide educational rigor and quality that helps prepare students for college.  Are assessed externally, AP by the College Board and ETS, IB by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

AP differs from IB  AP offers a “cafeteria plan” for which students can choose to take one AP course, several, or none.  AP results are based upon a single assessment.  AP is focused towards the educational system of the United States.

IB differs from AP  Theory of Knowledge provides connections.  Extended Essay requires independent research.  CAS ensures well-roundedness.  Internal Assessments measure a variety of skills. IB provides a whole, integrated curriculum.

IB differs from AP  IB is based upon multiple assessments, both Internal and External.  Independent student choice is often a feature of the assessments, to a greater degree than on AP assessments.  Assessments reflect those typically used in colleges to a greater degree than AP assessments.

IB differs from AP  Assessments are designed to ensure that students are taught a broad range of research, experimental, analytical, and presentation skills.  IB is more international in its outlook.  IB places greater stress upon the recognition that there are many differing points of view and students’ ability to weigh the validity of differing outlooks.

Assessment varies across the disciplines Language –Individual oral presentation History –Research paper Experimental Sciences –Experiment designed by student Visual Arts –Research workbook

IB Diploma Requirements

IB CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

IB Diploma Requirements  Complete Central Elements (TOK, CAS, EE)  Take Three Higher Level and Three Standard Level Courses  One Course (HL or SL) From Each Subject Group  Each course two years in length, except in some cases students can choose to take one SL course in a single year. At North Hills the first year of IB courses are often integrated with AP courses.

Sample IB Diploma o English A1 Higher Level o French BStandard Level o History of AmericasHigher Level o BiologyHigher Level o Math StudiesStandard Level o Visual ArtsStandard Level

Requirements to Receive IB Diploma  Satisfactory completion of CAS, EE, TOK, and IBDP courses in each group (including all Internal Assessments)  24 Diploma points or more (exams scored at 1-7)  Average HL score of 4 or more  No score of 1 on any exam  Scoring a 2 on any HL exam or an E on either EE or TOK raises point req. to 28

Advantages of IB F IB goes beyond AP preparation for college and life. –CAS encourages the development of the whole individual beyond academics. –Theory of Knowledge integrates modes of knowing from all subject areas. –IB tasks (such as the EE and IAs) develop a greater variety of skills valuable in college and the workplace, including research, experimentation, analysis, presentation, and time management. –Research is self-driven in areas of personal interest –Success in the IB Diploma Program inspires confidence leading to success in college and beyond. –International Baccalaureate fosters an international outlook for success in modern world.
