“Excellence in education is when we do everything that we can to make sure they become everything that they can.” − Carol Ann Tomlinson Program Options for Students

October 2013 Program Options for Students Meredith Casper, Director Accelerated and Enriched Instruction

Our Vision Our vision is that all schools will provide dynamic learning environments which challenge students to develop their intellectual power, creativity, and sense of self. All teachers will be knowledgeable about how able students learn effectively and will draw on a rich repertoire of innovative instructional strategies to support their students' achievements. There will be a climate of mutual caring and respect among stakeholders: teachers, parents, students, administrators, and community.

Our Mission The mission of Accelerated and Enriched Instruction is the full implementation of the Policy on Enriched and Innovative Instruction in all schools in MCPS. This process includes the following: Development and monitoring of the system wide identification procedures; Collaboration with the curriculum supervisors in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to create curriculum documents that clearly define outcomes for students who are motivated or capable of achieving high-end learning as well as the instructional strategies, resources and materials to achieve those outcomes; Design and implementation of training, guidance, and support to other offices, departments, and divisions in fulfilling their responsibilities outlined in the policy and regulation; Policy: Gifted and Talented and Education IOA Regulation: Gifted and Talented Education IOA-RA

Our Mission Advocate, nurture, and support of students from traditionally underrepresented populations in gifted and talented programs; Provide consultative support to schools as they develop and refine their ongoing programs for gifted and talented students in compliance with the policy; Monitor the development and refinement of a continuum of innovative programming models to meet the needs of gifted students at their home schools

Enriched and Accelerated Programming Options for All Students Local Programs Application Programs Choice Programs Signature Programs

Local Programs: Elementary MCPS Curriculum 2.0 (C2.0) is built around developing students' critical and creative thinking skills, as well as essential academic success skills, so that students are well prepared for a lifetime of learning. The intent of our recent revisions is to better engage students and teachers, and dedicate more learning time to subjects such as the arts, information literacy, science, social studies and physical education. Program enrichments in reading: William and Mary, Junior Great Books, Jacobs Ladder Program enrichments in math: enrichment and acceleration built within the grade level, course advancement beginning in Grade 4

Local Programs: Secondary Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and advanced-level courses provide rigorous and challenging studies for highly able and potentially high-achieving students who are capable or motivated to pursue rigorous and challenging instruction. **Students can enroll in individual Honors, AP, and advanced- level courses while not participating in an Honors program as a whole.
