Victorian Literature

Victorian literature was produced during the control of Queen Victoria ( ). Often considered a bridge between the romantic-era works of the previous century and what would become the literature of the newly industrialized world of the twentieth century.

The Novel The Victorian era was the great age of the English novel—realistic, thickly plotted, crowded with characters, and long. Novels were the best way to describe modern life and to entertain the middle class.. By the end of the period, the novel was not only the leading form of entertainment but also a primary way of analyzing and offering answers to social and political problems.

Victorian Poetry The Victorian age provided a major development of poetic ideals such as the increased use of the Sonnet as a poetic form, which was to influence later modern poets. Victorian poetry provided the link between the romantic movement and the modernist movement of the 20th Century. In the early nineteenth century writing was mainly for males, but due to the Victorian era women poets were able to become famous.

Best known Victorian Authors Charles Dickens The novels of Charles Dickens, full to overflowing with drama, comedy, and an endless variety of brilliant characters and plot complications. Dickens is still the most widely read novelist of the Victorian era. Emily Brontë Many have suggested that her works were a reflection of the difficulties women of that period faced.

Charlotte Brontë Charlotte’s novels are more rooted in convention, but daring in their own ways. Anne Brontë Anne has been described mild and less talented than her sisters, but her novels were sharp and ironic. All three Bronte sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—were writers. For a number of years they all published under the male pen names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.
