Poor families MMMMany people were poor in the Victorian times. FFFFamilies had up to six children and lots of babies so they were always very busy. MMMMost children were forced to go and work instead of going to school. SSSSome children would help out on a farm or stay at home and do the house work.

Money  Lots of Victorians were broke and were in need of money.  The oldest children went to work on a farm, did all the house jobs and became a servants.  They earned a sixpence every work day.

Children  Lots of Victorian children needed to do jobs like help out on a farm, work as a servant or just stayed at home doing the washing up or sewing up torn clothes.  After they did their jobs, they were too tired and too hungry to go and play

Work  The wasn’t that much work in the Victorian times but people didn’t have a choice if they had a family to feed.  Most girls stayed at home to help with the family but they worked as nannys too.  Children needed to work hard but they were as young as six!

Oliver Twist AAAA man called Charles Dickens wrote a book based on a Victorian child called Oliver Twist. IIIIts about an orphan who escapes the Workhouse and runs away to London. TTTThese are pictures of Oliver, begging for more food.

The Workhouse  The Workhouse was a place where you came to if you didn’t have any job.  It was infected with diseases and was a horrible place.  You got separated from your family first and got put into different places.  People were so desperate to not go there but if they lost their job, it was the only option.
