How did women dress? Usually, clothing was hand-made. It was really expensive and only the wealthy could afford a large wardrobe. The poor wore clothing from second-hand shops, and sewed their own clothes There were many layers to a dress. Women took very good care of their dresses because they were so expensive.

Upper and Lower Class Women They sold flowers, toffee apples, ice cream, cold drinks, shrimp, oysters, and whelks. Offered donkey and goat rides and some even did fortune telling. In the winter, it was harder to sell their goods so some people became prostitutes. Had less education and fewer resources or opportunities. Some were also bar maids, waitresses, and chambermaids. Women of the upper class didn’t need to work because their biggest responsibility was taking care of the house and planning parties.

Women’s Etiquette Women had to rise to their feet when they were being introduced or when someone entered the room. Ladies do a little curtsey when they are greeting someone They never turned their back on people. When they wanted to leave the room, they had to ask to be excused. Emotions were hidden. Manners were scrutinized by other and often a talking point in a conversation and gossip. A persons etiquette was associated with their status and wealth and was as important as being educated.
