Early Assessment Program Program Updates and Professional Development Opportunities Claudia Quezada, M.P.A. EAP Coordinator California State University, East Bay Direct (510)

Early Assessment Program  11 th grade testing (early assessment of college readiness)  Supplemental high school preparation in 12 th grade  Professional development  Reading Institute for Academic Preparation (RIAP)  Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC)

Early assessment of college readiness  Voluntary examination  Administered in 11 th grade in conjunction with STAR and CST’s  15 additional multiple-choice items in English and mathematics  45 minute essay required in English  Selected items from CST and additional EAP items (including essay in English) are scored to determine student readiness for college English and/or mathematics

EAP Testing Purposes Early warning  Identify students who need to do additional work in English and/or mathematics before entering the CSU Identify student readiness  Inform students, families, and high schools of students’ readiness for college-level work in English and mathematics 12 th grade interventions  Motivate students to take needed steps in 12 th grade to assure readiness

Why the EAP was created In 1999 over half of all students entering the CSU demonstrated a proficiency in English and mathematics of “not ready for college level courses.” Close to 66% of students entered the CSU needing remediation in at least one subject. A collaboration between –California State Board of Education – California Department of Education – California State University

EAP Goals  Increase number of student, faculty, staff and administrator participation  Increase parents’ knowledge and understanding of EAP  Augment communication of EAP resources  CSU EAP web site  CSU East Bay EAP web site  English & Math success web sites  RIAP and ERWC Professional Development Opportunities

Warning: Failure to Meet the EPT and ELM Requirements Costs Time and Money Students cannot enroll in for-credit CSU college English and/or math classes until they meet the requirements. They must spend time taking remedial classes during their freshman year until they meet the requirement. They have to pay for the remedial classes. They will graduate later because they get no degree credit for remedial classes. If students do not pass the remedial classes by the end of their first year, they will have to leave the university.

English Proficiency SAT I550 or more or more on the Reasoning Test SAT II680 or more on the Writing Test ACT24 or more on the English Test AP 3 or more on AP Language and Comp. or Literature and Comp. Mathematics Proficiency SAT I 550 or more on the math portion SAT II550 or more on Level IC or IIC of the math portion ACT 23 or more on the math portion AP3 or more on AP Calculus or Statistics Alternatives to the EAP

As far as how others can share the info, I would have them: 1.Maintain close contact with the English and math teachers at their site; 2.Use every venue to share data (e.g., school newsletter, staff meetings, department meetings, etc.) 3.College bound students must understand they have everything to gain and nothing to lose in participating in the EAP. 1.Give every math & English teacher a copy of their class roster with the names of students who took EAP highlighted 2.Each counselor will receive the same information for her/his counselees. In case there are students who are condition- ally exempt but not enrolled in a math class as a senior - hopefully, they will counsel such students to enroll in math immediately. 3.Meet with English and math department chairs to discuss EAP results & and how to share the info. with their departments. Discuss results’ implications, how to increase the number of students taking the EAP, and how to have more students achieve exempt status. Data Coach Tips (1.5 hr release time) Maria Carrillo High School, Sonoma County

The CSU has become very successful in helping remedial students achieve proficiency in mathematics and English during their freshman year. The number of students fully prepared for both mathematics and English by the second year of enrollment reached an all time high of 19,734 or 83% in Proficiency One Year later

New Essay Scoring and Administration Beginning Spring 2007, students are no longer required to fill in a “bubble” to guide the scoring of English EAP tests. All essays will be scored as long as one EAP item on the multiple-choice test is completed. We heard your request- “Get results back faster.” The EAP Essay administration window was moved up in 2007, and will also be moved up in The EAP essays must be administered between March 4-31, 2008.

NEW EAP Results Reporting EAP results are now included in the STAR Student Report. As a result, EAP scores will no longer be mailed to student homes or provided directly to the students. Schools will still receive: EAP Data File - a CD-ROM containing student results EAP Data File layout – a description of the fields included on the data file EAP District Reports – inside a green folder. There is a district report for each subject area tested.

NEW - View results online By following a simple five-step process, students can determine their English and mathematics EAP status and get step-by-step advice for preparing for the CSU. Note: Students must bubble where it says the CSU can receive their results, other-wise the results will not be available online.

EAP Results Web Site The new EAP website has been updated to look like the STAR data reported on the CDE website. The site now reports: EAP report information by county, district, and school; Subgroups such as English Language fluency, economic status, parent education, ethnicity, gender and disability.

Reading Institute for Academic Preparation (RIAP) CSUEB RIAP Online Registration ERWC Online Registration Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC)

Reading Institute for Academic Preparation (RIAP) The reading strategies, being able to to try them out as we learn them. The books are excellent! Learning more about the EAP and requirements for CSU students; Reading the article “The High School/College Disconnect”; The importance of students participating in the EAP. Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) This was an excellent workshop. It provided an engaging curriculum and ideas for lots of great learning activities; This was a great professional development session. Thank you for providing high school teachers with great training and materials; Great materials! Perfect for our seniors. The Feedback Is Great!

Thank you for your continued support of the Early Assessment Program!
