D O MALE BYU-I DAHO STUDENTS SPEND TOO MUCH ON A FIRST DATE ?!

B ACKGROUND I NFORMATION ING- Direct did a survey of 1015 people They asked what is the “most appropriate amount” to spend on a first date. Men thought that they should spend $108 Women thought they should spend $85 Women said that $192 was too much while $27 was too cheap. “Women clearly feel uncomfortable when a man spends too much on a first date,” said Lisa Claes, ING’s executive director.

O UR Q UESTION “Do male BYU-Idaho students spend too much on a first date?” Population- BYU- Idaho students Sample- 100 males students and 100 females students

D ATA C OLLECTION Question to girls- “How much should a guy spend on a first date?” Question to guys- “How much do you spend on a first date?” Each girl went to the MC and asked 25 guys and 25 girls Each manly man went to the library and asked 25 guys and 25 girls

D ATA C OLLECTION

T HE GIRLS SAID …

T HE GUYS SAID …

D ESCRIPTIVE S TATISTICS Guys ask Guys Mean- $18.75 Standard Deviation- $11.60 Range- $60 Median- $18.50 Mode- $20 Girls ask Girls Mean- $24.38 Standard Deviation- $11.12 Range- $45 Median- $20 Mode- $20

I NFERENTIAL S TATISTICS µ 1 = when girls ask girls µ 2 = when guys ask guys P-Value=.007 P-Value.007 <.05 Reject the null There is sufficient evidence to conclude that girls want guys to pay more on a first date.

CONCLUSION!!! We learned that, in actuality, girls think that guys should spend more We should have sent one guy to the MC and one girl to the MC, and had the guy and girl go together to ask every question. Girls would tell a lower amount to the guys asking than when a girl asked them Guys would say a higher amount when a girl asked them as opposed to when a guy asked them. Thus, men and women at BYU-Idaho both lie. A lot.
