How to Cite a Newspaper Article with No Author Steve Poppino CSI Library 6/25/2012

Sometimes you will run across a publication that has neither a personal author nor a corporate one. This is an example from a newspaper. When you copy it from MasterFILE Premier, it looks like this. It needs some work.

If there is no author, start the citation with the title of the article. Notice that for this title, only the first word and the abbreviation WIC get capital letters.

Next comes the date of the issue of the newspaper. It’s a daily, so include the month, day, and year. The year comes first, because it is an important part of in-text citations.

Since the article title is already there, next comes the title of the newspaper. All the main words are capitalized, and in italics.

Now type the page number of the article. (A newspaper article will often have a letter for the section as well as a number for the page.) If you used the paper copy of this issue of the Times-News for your research, this makes a complete citation.

If you found this article online, either on the Times-News website or in a Library database, finish the citation with the URL of the newspaper. You will probably have to Google the newspaper to find its URL. It does not matter whether or not you can actually open the article at this website without a subscription. To the APA, this is the “online home” of this article.
