A Study of The Holy Spirit Professed miracles Professed divine revelation Professed spiritual contacts and direct faith Professed direct leading The rise of mysticism and emotionalism has played a large part in attributing to the Holy Spirit many present- day activities. We must “test the spirits” to see if these things are so. REMEMBER - True spirituality is fearing God and keeping His commandments.

The Holy Spirit Pouring Out Baptism

Two Primary Views Among Denominations  That the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to be received by all believers today and takes place when God saves us and puts us into Christ. (much of Protestantism)  That the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to be received by all believers today and is a powerful “after-salvation” experience evidenced by speaking in tongues. (“Spirit-filled” groups; Pentecostalism)

The Assemblies of God / USA 16 Fundamental Truths 7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes… the bestowment of the gifts... (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4; 1:8; 1 Cor. 12:1-31). This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. (Acts 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9)

Jimmy Draper Baptist Press News Baptism by the Holy Spirit is a wondrously unique experience. By that experience we are joined to the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13, Romans 6:3, Galatians 3:27). Baptism by the Holy Spirit is not some extra-ordinary manifestation, for it happens to all believers.

GotQuestions.org Question: “What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?” Answer: The baptism of the Holy Spirit may be defined as that work whereby the Spirit of God places the believer into union with Christ and into union with other believers in the Body of Christ at the moment of salvation. (1 Corinthians 12:13; Romans 6:1-4)

Catholic Doctrine David Pentrack “What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?” It is an experience of God present in the person of the Holy Spirit. It is an experience required by Jesus for all of His disciples, and as such, is one of the seven Sacraments that our Church bestows on and requires of all the faithful - Confirmation - the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

The pouring out of the Holy Spirit

What Jews knew about the Spirit of God  The Spirit of God was involved in the miracle of creation And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. (Genesis 1:2)

What Jews knew about the Spirit of God  The Spirit of God had come upon Israel’s leaders to endow them for their special work, often accompanied by prophecy. The seventy that helped Moses judge Israel (Numbers 11:25) The judges of whom it was said, “the Spirit of the Lord came upon them” (Judg. 14:6) King Saul (1 Sam. 10:6) and King David (1 Sam. 16:13) when they were anointed

What Jews knew about the Spirit of God  The Spirit of God had come upon God’s prophets David: “The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue (2 Samuel 23:2). Balaam in Numbers 24:2 “And testified against them by Your Spirit in Your prophets (Neh. 9:30).

The pouring out of the Holy Spirit Old Testament The time at which the Spirit would begin His works tied to salvation is called “the pouring out of the Spirit”.

Promises in Isaiah  Isaiah 32:11-18 Judah is now extremely corrupt and evil. Verses are part of a longer passage (most of Chapters 31 and 32) which tells of the punishments God will bring down upon them if they do not repent. In verses God also reminds them that He will again bless them after they repent. The blessing after their repentance is called the pouring out of the Spirit

Promises in Isaiah  Isaiah 44:1-5 Isa. 44 is in the middle of a section about the coming Savior - “My Servant” (Isa ) “I will pour out water on the thirsty land” (v3) “I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring” (v3) “And My blessing on your descendants” (v3)  Pouring out the Spirit is the same as pouring out God’s blessings And this pouring out is tied to the coming of the Savior

Promises in Ezekiel  Ezekiel 39:25-29 Ezekiel wrote after the people had been taken into slavery as Isaiah had prophesied. Ezekiel is referring to the time when Israel will repent and turn back to God. Then God will bless them. “I shall have poured out My Spirit upon them”

Promises in Joel Joel 2: “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions… 31 …Before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 32 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Promises in Zechariah  Zechariah 12:8-10 Pouring out of the Spirit o Showing grace (God’s blessings) and supplication (a time when man can approach God through prayer) Comes when they can look upon God whom they had pierced o Comes with a conviction of sin

“I Will Pour Out My Spirit” Isaiah 32:11-18 Isaiah 44:1-5 Ezekiel 39:25-29 Joel 2:28-32 Zechariah 12:8-10 God said He would pour out His Spirit when He blessed people with salvation and took vengeance upon the disobedient nation of Israel. (cf. Isaiah 61:1-3)

The pouring out of the Holy Spirit New Testament

“He Will Baptize You with the Holy Spirit and Fire” Matthew 3:7-12 To Whom Was John Speaking? The Leaders of the Nation of Israel! Salvation and Judgment! Blessings and Vengeance! Isaiah 61:1-3!

Luke 24:47-49 (NKJV) 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high." Acts 1:4-5 (NKJV) 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

(Acts 1:24-2:1) “...with the eleven apostles. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place...” 2 Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 …there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance "are not all these who speak Galileans? 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them,

Peter Said that Joel’s Prophecy was Fulfilled on Pentecost Acts 2:16-17: “ But this is that which was spoken of by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh…’” Acts 2:33: “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Only on One Other Occasion was the Holy Spirit “Poured Out” Acts 10:45-46: “And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.”

Acts 11:15-17: “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ’John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?.” Peter connected this “pouring out” with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit “at the beginning”

Acts 15:8-9: “So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” Peter connected this “pouring out” with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit “at the beginning”

Thus, the “pouring out” of the Holy Spirit is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and it occurred on only two occasions:  Pentecost (first Jews)  Cornelius (first Gentiles) Salvation and Vengeance ALL FLESH! (Joel 2:28)

 Jesus promised the apostles that the Spirit would … Be a Helper & abide with them – Jn. 14:16-17 Teach them & remind them – Jn. 14:26 Testify about the Christ – Jn. 15:26-27 Convict the world – Jn. 16:7-11 Guide them into all truth – Jn. 16:12-13 Glorify Jesus – Jn. 16:14  The Holy Spirit was to reveal God’s Word to save men’s souls.
