Our Baptismal Promises…What Are They? When you were presented for Baptism: The Pastor read the following: “In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.”

Promises Your Parents and Sponsors made at your Baptism: “As you bring your child to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: -to live with them among God’s faithful people -to bring them to the word of God and the holy supper -to teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments -to place in their hands the holy scriptures And nurture them in faith and prayer SO THAT… your children may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, And work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your children grow in the Christian faith and life?”

Promises YOU are making at your Affirmation of Baptism---Confirmation this October: In the church service, after the profession of faith— The pastor will say: “You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: To live among God’s faithful people, To hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper, To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, To serve all people, following the example of Jesus, And to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?” And you will answer: I will and I ask God to help and guide me.

Unpacking Our Baptismal Promises– Look at the promises in the next few slides and write about what they each mean to you and your faith journey.

I intend… to live among God’s faithful people,

I intend to…. Hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper.

I intend to…. Proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed….

I intend to…. Serve all people, following the example of Jesus.

I intend to…. Strive for justice and peace in all the earth.
