The Manifestations of the Holy Spirit

Three Manifestations Baptism of the Holy Spirit: Acts 2; 10 Laying on of apostles’ hands: Acts 8; 19 Ordinary: 1 Cor. 6:19 Administrator Subject (who affected) PurposeDuration

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit Prophesied by John the Baptist (Matt. 3:11). Promised by Christ (Acts 1:8; 2:33)

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit Distinct Characteristics: –Administered by Christ (John 16:7; Matt. 3:11, “He will baptize you…”). Not from one person to another, but from Christ to man. –Subjects: Apostles (Acts 2), Household of Cornelius (Acts 10:44-46; 11:15). Only two instances ever recorded.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit Distinct Characteristics: –Purpose: Not a means of salvation (Acts 2:38; 10:47). Rather, to reveal truth, emphasize a point (Acts 1:8; 2:16ff.; 15:8) –Acts 11:15, 17: The outpouring was similar in both cases, but the effect was not. The apostles could transfer the Holy Spirit to others (Acts 8:17-18), but not Cornelius.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit Distinct Characteristics: –Duration: Two baptisms on Pentecost: Holy Spirit, water (33 A.D.). Two baptisms with Cornelius: Holy Spirit, water. One baptism in Eph. 4:6: (64 A.D.) Water baptism for salvation in 1 Pet. 3:20-21 (60 A.D.) Therefore, H.S. baptism cease and was not for salvation. –After H.S. baptism in Acts 2, the apostles alone were able to give the H.S. to others by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:12ff). –By 60 A.D. by 60 A.D. water was the only baptism. –Since apostles are not alive to lay hands, and water is the only baptism, then no spiritual gifts today.

Spiritual Gifts Administrators: Apostles only (Acts 8:12ff.; 19:6). Subjects: Some disciples (Acts 8:12-18; Acts 19:6). Purpose: Not salvation (Acts 8:12). Rather, as a help until revelation was complete (1 Cor. 12:31; 13:8-12). –Gifts are childish. –When church is full grown, childish things put away. Duration: Till revelation was complete and all apostles had died. No more need, no more apostles to lay hands on, no more miracles.

Ordinary: Indwelling Administrator: Preaching (Rom. 10:14, 17; Gal. 3:2—received by the hearing of faith). The word preached is the revelation of the Holy Spirit. Subjects: Each Christian individually (1Cor. 6:19; Church collectively (1 Cor. 3:16)

Ordinary: Indwelling Purposes: –Not miraculous. Manifest through active agreement with the revelation of the Holy Spirit. –Eph. 1:13: A “seal” to show that we are approved of God (i.e. seal of authentication) –Eph. 3:16: To strengthen the inner man –Rom. 8:16: Bear witness with our spirit that we are children of God. –Gal. 5:22, 23: Enable us to bear fruit (1 Tim.3:16-17). –Eph. 1:14: Guarantee (promise, down payment) until eternal redemption. –Gal. 5:18: Leads us through revelation –Eph. 2:18: Gives us access to the Father. –1 John 3:24; 4:13: Assure us that God abides in us and we in Him.

Ordinary: Indwelling Duration –For every Christian. –Received at Baptism (Acts 2:38). –To remain until Christ comes again and we receive our eternal hope. –“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory” (Eph. 1:13-14).

Conclusion God has a purpose for everything. Once its purpose has been fulfilled, there is no longer any need to go back to it (i.e. Old Law, Circumcision, etc.). The purpose for the baptism of the Holy Spirit has been fulfilled. The purpose for spiritual gifts has been fulfilled. But the indwelling of the Spirit is ongoing. It is happening today among those who walk in the Spirit.
