The First Mention Principle Matthew 19:3-9

Definition Where a subject is first mentioned in Scripture. The meaning found here will be consistent throughout the Bible. The meaning found here will be in harmony with all references on the same subject throughout Scripture. Often used in conjunction with the Typical Principle.

Do’s and Don’ts Be sure it is the first mention of a subject. Remember, not the first mention of a word but of a subject matter. No following mention of the same subject will ever be in contrast with the first.

Baptism First mentioned through an innate type of Noah and the flood (I Peter 3:20-21) Baptism is life saving (salvation) Baptism is not just a physical cleansing. Baptism brings a clear conscience towards God. Baptism is associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ

The Progressive Mention Is the principle of starting at the first mention, then to the next mention and so on until consummation take place. Colossians 2:11-12 (circumcision) In this mention there is nothing at odds with the first

Circumcision/Baptism Baptism is not a human work (made without hands) Baptism results in sin being put off Baptism is buried with Christ Baptism is resurrected with Christ Baptism is valid only by faith Not man but what God does in baptism

Red Sea’s cloud of Baptism I Cor. 10:1-2 Baptism is a form of deliverance and separation from the old life. Baptism is for all. Baptized unto Moses then and now unto Jesus Christ.

The First Three Mentions Even without Acts 2:38 we find the following: Baptism is life saving (salvation) Baptism is not just a physical cleansing. Baptism brings a clear conscience towards God. Baptism is associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Continued Baptism is not a human work (made without hands) Baptism results in sin being put off Baptism is buried with Christ Baptism is resurrected with Christ Baptism is valid only by faith Not man but what God does in baptism

Continued Baptism is a form of deliverance and separation from the old life. Baptism is for all. Baptized unto Moses then and now unto Jesus Christ.

Full Mention Principle It is the end of the first mention principle and progressive principle. The end of the road. Matthew 3:6, 11, 13 (John baptizing in the river Jordan. Confession of sin Repentance Jesus said it fulfills all righteousness

Next Mention Mark 1:4 (for the remission of sins) John 3:22; 4:1-2 (Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, though Jesus himself baptized not but his disciples) Matthew 28:19 (remember this mention can not contradict the other mentions)

Continuing Mark 16:16 Acts 2:38 We could keep going to the full mention but I believe you see the point.
