The Sacrament of Baptism:

History: Isaiah 40:3 A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” Mt 3:3, Mk 1:3, Lk 3:4, Jn 1:23 Mt 3:11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I… he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Repent then vs. after the great commission

REPENT: Repentance that is mentioned in Mt 3:11 implies that of an internal change of heart. A personal conversion. There was no (grace) associated with it. Grace- supernatural gift of God Repentance was a conversion- to make oneself better. Changing their life around. The baptisms that John the Baptist performed were not a cleansing of sin, but cleansing of the soul.

The Baptism of Jesus: Mt 3:13 Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by? John John tells Jesus “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus was without sin, so why did he go to John to be baptized? He wished to be baptized by John as this was the final preparation for his mission as Messiah.

The Great Commission: Mt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Great Commission is baptism as we know of it today. With the Great Commission we receive Gods grace for the sacrament. By Gods grace- Our exterior is not “just” cleaned but transformed and makes new our interior, erasing sin (including original sin)

LOTA John the Baptist was given his name because of all the baptisms he preformed.

Sacrament: Baptism Essential Sacramental Symbol? (Symbol= something that represents something else) Water poured over or immersed in water while saying, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Minister: Bishop, priest, deacon, or anyone in an emergency Repeated? No

Baptism Video

Do you have to be Baptized to go to Heaven? YES… Why??? John 3:5 – Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.”

God is what??? BUT… The PERFECTION of what??? MERCY So what happens if someone isn’t baptized but has the desire??

CCC 1257 EMPASIS ADD: baptism is NEEDED. What happens though to those people who have not heard the word of God?

What’s the catch? This is not a loophole in not knowing! God is perfect mercy and we believe that he will take care of all of his children.

Second Vatican Council Second Vatican Council- reaffirmed Gods mercy toward those whom Baptism was never a true option, essentially saying that God offers everyone the opportunity for salvation, even if in unperceivable ways.

Why do Catholics baptize infants First?? Second?? Third??

Effects of Baptism Removal of original sin and of actual sin if present Imprinting of an indelible sign that consecrates the person for Christian worship Entry into Christ’s Mystical Body, the Chruch Sanctifying grace, which is a share in God’s own life Adoption by God as his child

Cont. Becoming a temple of the Holy Spirit, capable of worshipping God as He desires Actual grace, assistance from God to resist sin The theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity The moral virtues of prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude which help to perfect the theological virtues Entry into Paradise after a life lived in Christ.

Two principle effects of baptism Purification from sin and new birth in the Holy Spirit.

Celebration of the Rite You MUST use water and he recitation of the Trinitarian formula: These two elements must be present for a valid baptism. Even in EMERGENCY The rite beings with the celebrant making the sign of the cross on the forehead of the candidate for Baptism.

Passages from the Bible are read to explain how Baptism makes possible the entry into the life of faith. Celebrant says an exorcism over the candidate to signify liberation from sin He anoints the candidate with oil Then the baptismal promises are recited- renunciation of Satan and profession of faith.

The candidate is immersed in water or water poured over their head Trinitarian formula Anointed with sacred chrism Blessed Given a white garment to indicate that they have been risen with Christ Candle is lit to remind the faithful that baptism are to be the light of the world

Types of Baptism Baptism by water Baptism of desire Baptism of blood

Baptism of blood Occurs when a person has not been baptized with water suffers death for the sake of his faith in Jesus. This person is baptized by and forth his death.
