The Simple Truth About Salvation
Presentation transcript:

Romans 10:8-15 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." (Romans 10:13 NKJV)

Examining the Context  Paul’s desire (Rom 10:1-3)  They designed a righteousness of their own (Rom 10:3)  Consider God’s way of faith (v.4-6)  What does this righteousness of faith say about salvation? (v.6-8)  The content of what we preach (v.9,10)

Calling Upon the Name of the Lord  Those in Gen 4:26 called upon God, but not for salvation  Why would man call upon God? TRANSGRESSION  Whatever calling upon the name of the Lord means, its result is salvation  The calling is open to all: whosoever (Rom. 10:13; Gal 3:28; Rom 2:11; 2 Pet 3:9) And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD. (Genesis 4:26 NKJV)

 The importance of this passage...  Many have never called upon the Lord  Many think they have called uponthe Lord  Those who have called upon the Lord need to help others call upon the Lord Calling Upon the Name of the Lord For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." (Romans 10:13 NKJV)

Preventing Misunderstanding Preventing Misunderstanding  “Calling” is not only declaring belief in Jesus as Lord (Matthew 7:21-23)  “Calling” is not praying for salvation (Acts 9:11; 22:16; 10:25-35)  “Calling” is not believing (Rom 10:14)  “Calling” means to appeal (Gen 4:26; 12:8; 26:25; Acts 25:11)

Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord, etc. To turn to the Lord for salvation in his appointed way. It means far more than simply prayer. He who would call on the name of the Lord for salvation must do more than say, "Lord, Lord, open unto us" [Lu 13:25]. He must hear and obey (Mt 7:21). People’s N.T. Commentary

What Is Involved In Calling? What Is Involved In Calling?  Not a single statement pleading for salvation!  Calling involves all the instructions of God: (1) Our sin, (2) He alone can pardon, (3) Listen and obey His plan offered in the gospel  Consider V  Demonstrated in Acts 22:13-16 and Acts 2:21-41

God Also Calls Us— We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. (Romans 8:28-30 RSV) (See also Acts 2:38-40)

God Also Calls Us— How? Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, (2 Timothy 1:8-9 RSV) May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 RSV)

God Calls Us Through The Gospel But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 RSV)

God calls man through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel tells man how to call on The Lord.

We Call on The Lord By Obeying The Gospel Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him." (Acts 2:37-39 RSV) (See also Acts 22:16)

 Understanding of this Phrase Is Consistent with Other Passages of Scripture Regarding Salvation...  Faith is essential to salvation... Jn. 8:24; Heb. 11:6  Repentance is essential to salvation Pet. 3:9; Acts 17:30  Confession is essential to salvation... Matt. 10:32-33; Mark 8:38  Baptism is essential to salvation Mark 16:15-16; 1 Pet. 3:21  Continued faithfulness is essential to salvation..... Rev. 2:10

And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.' (Acts 22:16 RSV) Have You Called On The Lord?
