Whose Feet Do You Sit At?

Rev 14:13 “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.” What does it mean that “their works follow them”? Not by our own righteousness Titus 3:5 But obedient faith that does God’s will 1 Thess 1:3; Jn 6:29; Gal 5:6; Jas 2:22,24

Note Titus 2:11-14 and what God’s grace teaches us… To deny To live Ungodliness and Lusts Soberly Righteously Godly What does this mean?

This means our deeds, work, our labor is to be that of a purified people who are zealous for every good work. Titus 2:13-14 We should be careful to continue in this lifestyle. Titus 3:8 What then are the works of Rev 14:13 referring to? See Eccl 12:13-14 Jn 12:42-43

What will you do for the praise of men? To change a person’s conduct, we have to look to the heart of the matter. Proverbs 4:23; Mark 7:20ff To change one’s attitude toward their attire, the heart must be right. Would you undress in public for attention…or wear revealing clothes so people will notice and lust after you?

If your heart is right with God it will… 1) Seek all divine revelation on the subject 2) Learn to love these principals and commands for they please God 3) Put those things into practice in your life 4) Be so mindful of those principals that violation of them bothers your trained conscience

Is it still possible for someone to have a conscience void of offense and still not be pleasing to God in their dress? Yes. Consider Acts 23:1 versus 22:4-5 Let us now focus on the specific question of “What is immodest?”

Immodesty may be defined as the wearing of clothing that reveals or emphasizes parts of the body that, when seen by the opposite sex, draws attention to you and creates evil desires. This type of dress would include short shorts, mini skirts, bathing suits, see- through blouses, low-cut clothing, tube tops, or any tight clothing that is revealing in a sensual or provocative way.

We emphasize at this point that customs and culture do not alone establish what is modest. These things may play some role, though they be minor in contrast to principals in the scriptures. What do the scriptures say? 1 Tim 2:9; 1 Peter 3:3-4

In the garden of Eden Gen 3:7; 3:21 Both man and woman’s idea of modesty was not suitable in God’s eyes. In Luke 8:27 we have a demon possessed man who wore no clothes. Yet later in the text, verse 35, the man was found clothed, in his right mind, sitting at Jesus’ feet. Lesson?????

We learn from the Old Testament what God views as nakedness. See Ex 20:26 and Ex 28:42; Is 47:2-3 ( Keil and Delitzsch ) God says that the exposing of one’s thighs is nakedness. How then should I dress? Is this principal removed in the New Testament? Am I permitted to be exposed under the law of Christ?

Consider the number of passages that condemn sexual sins in the New Testament. Note that men are visually stimulated (as in the case of Bathsheba and David) when considering these passages in light of modesty. Matt 5:28- looking with lust Mark 7:21ff- evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, covetousness, wickedness, lewdness, an evil eye…

1 Cor 6:18 Flee sexual immorality 1 Cor 7:2 Because of sexual immorality… 1 Cor 6:9 The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom Rom 13:13-14 Do not walk in lewdness and lust 1 Tim 5:22 Do not share in others’ sins Phil 4:8 Thinking on pure things 1 Peter 4:2-4 Not living for the lusts of men

The conclusion of our study is this… We can understand from the bible how to obey God’s command to be modest. If we do not do this, we are living a life of sin and are doomed eternally unless we repent. God’s people need to dress in such a way as to be chaste not so as to be chased!

Are you a Christian? Jesus wants you to be saved. Jesus said you must believe in Him in John 8:24 Jesus said to repent or perish Luke 13:3 Jesus said the believer is to be baptized in Mark 16:16.
