BEAL BANK 55th REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR l Part of International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) Millions of student projects worldwide l Our Region:Dallas plus 7 other surrounding counties l 1,000 students here today, won at school and district fairs. Winners go to State and International
TWO KINDS OF JUDGE RED RIBBONS Science Category Judges determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd places BLUE RIBBONS Special Award Judges determine donor organization’s own prizes.
Divisions & Categories l l Projects are divided into: Junior Division (grades 6-8) Senior Division (grades 9-12) l l Divisions are divided into 17 science categories from: Animal Science.. To … Plant Science. l l You will also see acronyms for categories: Animal Science = AS Plant Science = PS …. Etc.
Judge Groups l Each group is numbered and interviews students in a particular Division/Category l Each group must have a Captain l We aim for at least 3 judges in a group l Large categories have more than one judge group, will need a 2 nd round (later).

ROUND 1 Results l Captain’s BLUE results sheet: Your group is one of several for the category. Pick Top Three projects plus suggest up to two Hon. Ments. for Rd 2. l Captain’s ORANGE results sheet: Yours is the only group for the category. Rank & select up to six Hon. Ments. l Captains submit results and scoresheets to Admin desk by 12:30 p.m. l Captains submit results and all scoresheets to Admin desk by 12:30 p.m.
ROUND 2 Results Rd 2 required if more than one judge group in category. l Captains meet at Admin desk by 1:30 p.m. l Compare projects across groups, rank & select up to six Hon. Ments. l Submit results to Central Admin desk by 2:30 p.m.

SCORING l Complete a scoresheet for each project l Score on either Scientific Thought or Engineering Goals, as appropriate l Use scores as basis for discussion l Give all scoresheets to your Captain

SENSITIVITY l Consider age and maturity. l Be aware of knowledge level. l Be respectful : please discuss, not lecture, in your interview. l This is serious competition for students
Judging “DOs” l Each judge interviews every project. l Only one judge at a project at one time. l Ask the student many detailed questions. l Budget 8-10 minutes for each project. l Complete evaluations away from the student. l Remember, your interviews are the highlight of the students’ fair experience.
JUDGING “DON’Ts” l Ask about parents or school l Judge someone you know l Dismiss/Ignore weak projects l Fill out forms in front of the student l Discuss your judging process with students/parents/teachers later students/parents/teachers later
CAPTAINS’ RESPONSIBILITIES l Leadership in discussion, consensus building, accuracy. l Arbitrate differences of opinion. l Listen closely for public address announcements. l MAINTAIN THE TIMETABLE
CAPTAINS’ RESPONSIBILITIES l Begin judging when released at 9 a.m. l Return Round 1 results and all scoresheets by 12:30 p.m. l Meet with other Captains for Round 2 by 1:30 p.m. ( l Meet with other Captains for Round 2 by 1:30 p.m. (if needed).
