Bell Ringer What does school culture mean to you? Discuss this with your partner….

What Is The Culture of School The key to successful performance is the heart and spirit infused into relationships among people, their efforts to serve all students, and a shared sense of responsibility for learning. Without heart and spirit nourished by cultural ways, schools become learning factories devoid of soul and passion. (Peterson and Deal, The Shaping School Culture Fieldbook)

Core Values and Mission  Crescent Elementary believes that all students must be exposed to a rigorous curriculum through the provision of high expectations.  We believe that a well-rounded citizen will be developed through the partnership of home, community, and school.  The staff believes that all students have a capacity for leadership and deserve a safe, nurturing environment where that ability can be developed. Crescent Elementary, educating tomorrow’s leaders today!

Data Driven Instruction Data drives what teachers do in the classroom. WESTEST2 Data is analyzed in August with an emphasis on weak CSOs and students falling in the Partial Mastery and Novice range. Skills groups are set up with the interventionist to reteach the CSOs. After the first Acuity Benchmark another CSO analysis is done, classroom teachers develop reteach lessons, skills groups are realigned, and test talks are completed with the student. Students also develop goals for the following benchmark. This is repeated after the second benchmark. Teachers also use data from LEXIA, Think Through Math, and WV Writes, and STARS to guide lessons, interventions, and skills groups. Kindergarten students are given screeners for letter naming and initial sound fluency as well as information from Mimo Headsprout. First and Second graders are given STARS, Quick Phonics Screener, as well as information from LEXIA. K-2 students get the benefit of Literature Groups and for those who need it an intervention group.

High Expectations The Crescent Elementary Staff believes that all students can achieve. Students are supported through differentiated instruction, allowing for acceleration and remediation. Title I teachers work with classroom teachers to develop intervention groups. Part time interventionist targets 3-5 students who have skill deficits. After school programs are available for additional instruction. Computer programs target individual skill levels and advance students who need acceleration and reteach AR Program allows for reading practice at students instructional levels.

Parent Involvement Parent Volunteers Readers Field Day “Grapefull of Greetings” “A Taste of Crescent”

Bucket Fillers Have You Filled A Bucket Today, Carol McCloud This is our way of modeling appropriate behavior. Each morning there is a “Bucket Filling” thought of the day. Students are reminded to be “Bucket Fillers” in all aspects of the school day.

Community Involvement Cross Point Community Church **Bags of Love **Teacher Wish List Read Aloud **Community Members Read to Classes Chipmunk Chatter **Local College Student works with Fifth Graders to publish school newspaper. Community Members Support Archery in The Schools Program.

Community Outreach  Students are taught the importance of contributing to their community.  Our children have participated in raising funds for the Bowyers Hospice House.  Our school lost our guidance counselor to lung cancer. The school family organized a food drive to serve the families who had loved ones in hospice.  This reinforced the need to be giving community members.

Celebrations Students are encouraged to set goals. When goals are met celebrations occur. *Star Students *Six Week Incentives *Pie in Principal’s Face *Kiss A Pig We believe that students who learn to set personal goals and learn to evaluate them become successful adults. *Students set personal goals several times during the year and then check goals to see how they are progressing. *Students who are experiencing difficulty with behavior benefit from a behavior reteach session in which personal behavior goals are developed.
