HIGHER STILL PHYSICAL EDUCATION INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Activity: Badminton Area of Analysis: Skills and Technique I think that my weakness is: My overhead clear.

Now give a brief statement explaining why this aspect is important to your whole performance.  Frequently used stroke.  Weak part of my game.  Limited effectiveness as a majority fly high to the mid-court.  Therefore gives opponent a strong attacking option.  Limits options in a game.

Outcome 1

P.C (a) Describe the methods you used to gather both your initial and more focused data. Initial Data  General observation schedule  Game analysis (20-30 mins)  Fully explain how it was carried out eg.list of strokes, tick if effective or ineffective, peer observes your performance, opponent of similar ability. Focused Data Movement analysis  Fully explain how it was carried out eg. Split into Preparation, Action & Recovery, subroutines, key for recording. Scatter-diagram  Fully explain eg. Each OHC was recorded with an ‘X’ on the court (where it would have landed), within competitive game.

P.C (a) Explain why the methods you used for gathering data were appropriate and valid.  Data gathered in a game situation.  Data is straightforward to interpret.  Instant record of results.  Permanent record so you can relate back to for monitoring purposes.  Focused data was relevant to the major weakness highlighted in my whole game.  Technique was analysed as well as shot outcome.  Peer analysis for an unbiased opinion.  Weaknesses identified helped plan a relevant training programme.

P.C (b) & (c) Describe, in detail, the information about your performance that you were able to obtain from the data.  Firstly analyse your initial data – back up with statistics. Remember to also highlight your strengths.  Then analyse all your focused data. Eg. Preparation, action, recovery and outcome.  Also include your own thoughts (fluency, timing etc).

P.C (c) & (d) Explain clearly what you now regard as your development needs.  Improvement is required in my OHC.  More distance is required  Subroutines in the preparation and action phases require improvement (be specific).  Shot placement also requires improvement to put more pressure on my opponent.

Outcome 2

Key Concepts and features Key Concept 1: Skill/technique improvement through movement analysis. Key Feature: In relation to performance, the purposes of collecting relevant and detailed information.

P.C (a) Explain how you used this information to help you plan an appropriate Training Program.  It provides specific technique information.  Enables you to find out specific aspects of your technique that require improvement.  This form of analysis is useful when studying ‘complex’ skills as it can be split into preparation, action and recovery.  Training programme is therefore planned to improve the weaknesses that were identified within the observation schedule.  I took into account my specific needs. These were: Moving behind shuttle. Body turns side onto the net. Moving behind shuttle. Body turns side onto the net. e.g. Weight shifts onto back foot. Weight transferred forward at the point of contact. Impact is made with a straight arm.

Key Concepts and Features Key Concept 2: The development of skill and the refinement of technique. Key Feature: Principles of effective practice.

P.C (a) Explain how you used this information to help you plan an appropriate Training Program.  Clear objectives - consideration of current strengths and weaknesses. Each session had a focus, relevant to weaknesses identified.  Progression - practices are meaningful to your current level. Moved from ‘closed’, simple practices to more ‘open’, complex ones. When you are ready, progress to more demanding practices. Use examples.  Work/rest ratio – varies according to experience, your level, complexity of skill and physical demands. Give examples of some of the work/rest ratios you used. Longer work periods as you improve.

P.C (b) Describe and justify the methods/forms of training you used in your training program.  Explain the reasons why you would use the various methods.  Gradual progression - because it is a complex skill. I can move on when I feel I am ready.  Shadowing - help establish the pattern of movements under no pressure.  Drills - can be adapted to suit level and focus.  Repetition - to groove the technique so it becomes ‘automatic’.  Conditioned Games - makes practice more ‘open’ and ‘game-like’. Emphasise through a game what you have been working on.

P.C (c) Outline the programme of work you designed to develop the selected aspect of performance. Number the practices in the order you would progress through them. For each practice: Relate the various methods of training to improving YOUR weaknesses in the OHC that were identified earlier on. Relate the various methods of training to improving YOUR weaknesses in the OHC that were identified earlier on. link in work/rest ratio. link in work/rest ratio. For example: 1. Shadowing 2. feed from side 3. feed from server 4. same as above but move from base (footwork) 5. hit targets for length – try this ½ court then full court to work on shot placement 6. set (continuous) rally 7. conditioned game 8. pressure training.

Outcome 3

Training Diary Session Brief reflections/evaluations on or about training

P.C (b) Describe how you monitored the effect that training programme was having on your weakness.  Retesting at various times during the training programme. Retest under the same conditions as before. Compare results. All observation schedules.  By reviewing my training log. Was the session too demanding or not demanding enough?  Internal feedback – fully explain this.

P.C (c) Describe how and explain why some parts of the programme were adapted as the programme progressed.  In the early stages I progressed well so I left the programme unchanged. Using gradual progression I was clearly moving on at the right stage.  Pick a weakness that you think requires additional work near the end of the training programme (take weakness from observation schedule and training diary), then go back and practice it again. E.g. Movement behind the shuttle. Fully explain why you did this.

Outcome 4

P.C (a) Discuss the effect that your Training Programme has had on your weakness. i.e. comparing data before/after.  Fully describe the results of the final retests of all observation schedules.  To what extent have you improved? Back up with statistics/evidence.

P.C (b) Discuss the effect that improvement in your weakness has had on your overall performance. i.e. what you are able to do now that you were unable to do before.  Now a more effective player overall.  More confident to attempt an OHC in a game situation.  Now possible to put my opponent under pressure by hitting the shuttle to the back of the court.  More options available in a game.  More time to return to the base position – now able to think of next stroke to use.

P.C (c) Discuss your future development needs in the same area of performance.  Still a lack of consistency when performing the OHC.  Occasionally hit high to the mid-court so future practice of this stroke is important.  Will continue to retest and record progress on this stroke as well as others in order to further develop my overall performance.

Helpful hints!  Plan to do an outcome per day. This leaves period 2 on Thursday to tie up loose ends.  Save time by calculating percentages in your general observation schedules at home!  Write in the first person – “I improved….”  Revise each outcome the night before so its fresh in your mind.  At least half marks in EVERY question is required to pass!  Remember to bring your observation schedule – they have to be submitted with your assessment so make sure they are neat!
