Essential Question: What is the distributive property and how do I use it to solve expressions?

Remember Order of Operations?????? 3(5 + 6) 3(11) 33

Can you figure out the process? Example 1 5(6 + 3) 5(6) + 5(3) 30 + 15 45 Example 2 3(5 – 2) 3(5) – 3 (2) 15 – 6 9

Distributive Property The Distributive Property is easy to remember, if you recall that "multiplication distributes over addition". Any time they refer in a problem to using the Distributive Property, they want you to take something through the parentheses In English: If you are multiplying an addition or subtraction problem in parentheses then you can distribute the multiplication to both numbers.

Why is the following true? 2(x + y) = 2x + 2y 2(3 + 4) = 2(3) + 2(4) Since they distributed through the parentheses, this is true by the Distributive Property. Instead of multiplying the answer to the addition problem; you can multiply both addends first then add.

BRAIN POP

What is the distributive property? For all numbers a, b, and, c, a(b +c) is the same as ab + ac Another way to solve a problem if you are multiplying the parentheses by a value

4th: Solve. Use integer rules! 1st: Multiply the value outside the parentheses by the first value inside the parentheses 2nd: Keep the math operation the same 3rd: Multiply the value outside the Parentheses by the 2nd value inside the parentheses 4th: Solve. Use integer rules!

Distributive Property T/B pp. 288-291

For Example: 5(6 + 5) 5(6) + 5(5) 30 + 25 55

For Example: 6(2 - 8) 6(2) - 6(8) 12 - 48 12 + (-48) -36

You Try It: 5(3 + 7) 5 (2+2) 2 (7+2) 8 (100 – 4) 6 (-7 + -8) -4 (7 + -6) -3 [-9 – (-6)]

It works backwards 9(72) = 9(70) +9(2) You can take an original # and turn it into two separate numbers that add up to the value of the original #
