Adding Polynomials with Miss Pennington Click to begin!begin

Adding polynomials is just like adding any other problem with just a little bit more thinking… You have to place the like terms near each other while adding to make it easier on yourself! This can be done vertically or horizontally. It’s just like adding anything else!

Example First I will show you how to do this horizontally! Simplify: (3x+6) + (17x+12 ) Step 1: Get rid of parentheses. If you need to distribute out a negative sign, do so now. (In this problem you don’t need to do that) Step 2: Group like terms. Step 3: Simplify Step 1: 3x+6+17x+12 Step 2: 3x+17x+6+12 Step 3: 20x+18 Final Answer: 20x+18 I like adding horizontally better than vertically!

Example Now I will show you how to do the same problem vertically! Adding a problem vertically is the same way you added in elementary school where you line the number up and add them! Step 1: Get rid of the parentheses. If you need to distribute a negative, do so now. Step 2: Place the polynomials in a vertical addition formula. Step 3: Simplify Simplify: (3x+6) + (17x+12 ) Step 1: 3x+6+17x+12 Step 2: 3x x + 12 Step 3: 20x +18 Final Answer: 20x+18

Simplify: (7x 2 – x – 4) + (x 2 – 2x – 3) 7x 2 – x – 4 + x 2 - 2x – 3 7x 2 + x 2 –x – 2x – 3 – 4 8x 2 – 3x - 7 I have highlighted the three different steps from the 1 st slide since we are using the horizontal adding method!
