A classroom experiment

Transparency – everyone could see Moral: don’t need too much. Be happy to have needs met Peer pressure Monitor made sure – accountable Social cost - reciprocate

Every week, the President will receive N X,000 (X is a random number, usually around 25) President will choose how to spend it. 1 – Public Good (∑C i /100,000)^2 will go to EVERYONE 2 – Private Transfers Pres tells me who gets how much (including the Pres!) At the end of the experiment, I add up the N and give you a score that goes into your grade.

Bureaucracy & Judiciary & Election Commission I will ensure all rules are followed The media I will report each week on how large the public good is. I will tell you privately if you received a transfer. (Alternatively: One of you)

Term of office – How long? How many? 1 week? 1 month but can be deposed? Election rules? Ballot secret? Campaign promises? Is there an opposition? How and when can we make Constitutional changes? Does the President earn a wage? Life will get more complicated after the midterm

This weekend: me with proposed Constitution rules Monday: We vote on Constitution Wednesday: We vote on First President
