What do you have to do for your Sahel coursework? Write an article describing and explaining desertification in the Sahel region. Produce an editorial comparing different management solutions for this ecosystem. Finish with your own views on how the Sahel should be managed. HINT: Read the example of an A grade piece of coursework before you begin.

Structure Where is the Sahel? (map) Describe the ecosystem (How have plants and animals adapted to be successful?) What are the causes of desertification? How is the region / population affected by desertification? Give an example (country) showing the causes and effects of desertification. Editorial: How should the region be managed? – sustainable development?

How do you get full marks? Give specific quotes / figures (knowledge) e.g.: agricultural land is being lost at x metres a day. Make connections (understanding) e.g.: increased population, increased use of firewood, increased deforestation, less soil protection, more desertification...
