Congratulations! You are on the way to attaining a Master’s degree in Community Health Promotion

 What is graduate school all about?  Many things!  Adventure that comes with discovery of new information & skills  Master a body of knowledge that places you in an elite group

UG vs. Grad Study  How does graduate school differ from undergraduate study?  More focused study in your identified career of interest, it’s your degree!  More emphasis on establishing a network / support system; students as colleagues  Stronger focus on research; the Master’s Degree moves toward creating new knowledge  Grades are important, but Capstone Experiences are probably more important

Tentative Admission  You received a letter from the Department of HHPR to acknowledge your tentative admission to the program of study  Any deficiencies were noted in the letter  You should complete any deficiencies within the first year of your study  Deficient course credits DO NOT count toward the 33 credits needed for graduation

Initial Advising Appointment AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER ADMISSION:  Meet with assigned faculty Advisor  Discuss professional goals  Community placement?  Ph.D. degree?  Complete a Course Checklist and Planning Sheet  Review required steps in achieving the M.S. degree.  Note due dates for necessary forms!

Course Checklist and Planning Sheet  Y ou are required to have a copy of this form in your folder  You should have an advisor guide your completion of this form  Sets out a tentative schedule of completion for all coursework and Capstone Experiences  Special note: You should not change your plan without consulting with your advisor and filing a revised form

Second Advising Appointment Following ~12 hours of coursework … Purpose: Review record of progress toward degree Choose capstone Complete necessary forms If doing Thesis, confirm topic and form committee

Capstone Experiences Internship: Completed by ALL Students Project: Choose ONE  Master’s Thesis  Independent Research (Graduate Project) AND Comprehensive Exam

Capstone Experiences CONT. Internship = 3 Credits 135 hours in the community Typically last semester of coursework Student identifies Site Pre-approval required -Hours completed prior to approval may not be counted toward completion Must purchase Internship Insurance

Capstone Experiences CONT. Research Component: Thesis Master’s Thesis = 6 Credits Appointment of Advisory Committee Thesis Committee: Director + 2 members of Grad Faculty Adhere to ALL Grad School Guidelines

Following ~24 hours of coursework : Purpose: o Review Course of Study o Confirm preparation for Internship o Confirm preparation for Independent Research or progress toward Thesis Third Advising Appointment

o Complete any remaining forms and take the last steps toward graduation o Graduation apps are due early in the semester you wish to graduate!! E.g. For this AY: You must apply for the degree with the Registrar October 1, 2012 for a December 2012 diploma March 1, 2013 for a May 2013 diploma July 1, 2013 for an August 2012 diploma Third Advising Appointment cont.

CHLP Program Reqs, cont.  To “walk” at Commencement –  Completed all CHLP and Research Core  Completed Internship and Research  6 or less credits of elective remaining

Graduate School Requirements  Transfer credits require submitting Request for Transfer of Graduate Credit form  All coursework must completed within 6 years of 1 st semester of enrollment  lapsed coursework must be retaken  A break in continuous attendance (Fall/Spring) creates a separation from the program  Separated means “booted”

Graduate School Reqs cont.  Separated students must reapply. You are not guaranteed readmission!  Taking more than 12 hours per semester requires special permission  Submit all required forms
