The CASTL Workspace: An Online Community of Scholars Jim Bequette Amy Stone ED298 March 9, 2003

“Much like a classroom where students of all backgrounds meet and discuss ideas, our scholars who come from a variety of disciplines and careers in education build upon each other’s knowledge, creating a community of learners. The idea that knowledge shared is knowledge in growth can be explored through our building an online community of teaching and learning that is not unlike the one we enjoy at our offices in California.”~Lee Shulman, President

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (CFAT) We believe that the practice and theory of teaching is an end in itself, and that teachers who reflect on the impact of their teaching and share their experiences enhance not only their own knowledge, but also that of their students and colleagues.” (Shulman 2003)

12 Major CFAT Programs & Initiatives: Knowledge Media Laboratory Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Delta Teacher Education Project Initiative on the Doctorate Legal Education Study Preparations for the Professions Program Initiatives in Liberal Education Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education Carnegie Community Program Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID) Cultures of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Development of Moral and Civic Responsibility (MCR)

The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) The purpose of the CASTL program is to “create a community of scholars, diverse in all the ways that matter in teaching and learning, whose work will advance the profession of teaching and deepen student learning.” (CASTL Higher Education brochure, 1999)

The Knowledge Media Lab (KML) “The Knowledge Media Laboratory uses new media and emerging technologies to exchange information, share knowledge and produce innovations that can transform teaching and learning.” (KML Website, 2003)
