BRM BASIC RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP REFERENCE: FM 23-9

BATTLE-SITE ZERO PRIOR TO ATTEMPTING TO GROUP AN M16A2 THE WEAPON MUST BE SET TO BATTLE-SITE ZERO. “WARNING”

FRONT SIGHT ASSEMBLY THE FRONT SIGHT CONSIST OF A SQUARE, ROTATING SIGHT POST WITH A FOUR POSITION, SPRING-LOADED DETENT. ADJUSTMENTS ARE MADE BY USING A SHARP INSTRUMENT TO RAISE OR LOWER THE FRONT SIGHT POST. THE SPRING-LOADED DETENT IS DEPRESSED, AND THE POST IS ROTATED IN THE DESIRED DIRECTION UNTIL IT IS FLUSH WITH THE ASSEMBLY HOUSING. SPRING LOADED DETENT ROTATING SITE POST ASSY HOUSING

ELEVATION KNOB REAR SIGHT ASSEMBLY THE REAR SIGHT CONSIST OF TWO SIGHT APERTURES, A WINDAGE KNOB, AND AN ELEVATION KNOB. THE ELEVATION KNOB SHOULD BE SET AT 8/3 THEN ONE CLICK TO THE RIGHT BATTLE SIGHT ZERO (CONT)

REAR SIGHT ASSEMBLY (CONT) THE WINDAGE KNOB IS ADJUSTED TO ALIGN THE INDEX MARK ON THE MOVING TARGET APERTURE WITH THE REAR SIGHT BASE INDEX. ENSURE THAT THE METER APERTURE IS IN THE UP POSITION. WINDAGE KNOB METER APERTURE MOVING TARGET APERTURE BASE INDEX

GROUPING TASK: Apply the four fundamentals of rifle marksmanship in the integrated act of firing with the M16A2 rifle (live fire). CONDITIONS: Day, on a 25-meter firing range, given a 300 meter zero target placed in the center of an E-type silhouette, M16A2 rifle, and 27 rounds of ammunition while wearing a helmet and LBE. STANDARDS: From the supported position, fire up to 27 rounds or less in 3-round shot groups and achieve two consecutive 3-round shot groups within a 4-cm circle.

1 2 AFTER EACH 3 ROUND SHOT GROUP THE SAFETIES SHOULD MOVE DOWN RANGE AND MARK THE TARGETS ONCE THE SOLDIER HAS FIRED TWO CONSECUTIVE 3 ROUND SHOT GROUPS IN A 4- CM CIRCLE THE SAFTY WILL MAKE A BOLT SIGHT ADJUSTMENT AND ALLOW THE SOLDIER TO FIRE ONE MORE TIME AT THE GROUPING TARGET

1 2 TO ADJUST THE FRONT SIGHT ASSEMBLY FIND THE CENTER OF THE SHOT GROUP. MEASURE THE DISTANCE TO THE ZERO LINE ON THE TARGET BY READING THE NUMBERS ON THE SIDE. IN THIS INSTANCE IT FALLS BETWEEN THE 6 AND 7, IT WOULD BE THE SAFTIES DESCRETION ON WHETHER TO ADJUST HIGH OR LOW. THE SAFETY WOULD ADVISE THE FIRER TO ADJUST THE FRONT SIGHT POST EITHER 6 OR 7 CLICKS IN THE CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. ADJUSTING THE FRONT SIGHT ASSEMBLY U6

1 2 TO ADJUST THE REAR SIGHT ASSEMBLY FIND THE CENTER OF THE SHOT GROUP. MEASURE THE DISTANCE TO THE ZERO LINE OF THE TARGET BY READING THE NUMBERS ON THE TOP OR BOTTOM. IN THIS INSTANCE IT FALLS BETWEEN THE 21 AND 24, THE ELEVATION KNOB WOULD BE TURNED EITHER 22 OR 23 CLICKS TO THE RIGHT. ADJUSTING THE REAR SIGHT ASSEMBLY 3 U6R23

1 2 GROUPING (CONT) WHAT WOULD YOU DO NOW? HAVE THE FIRER FIRE AGAIN SINCE THE TWO SHOT GROUPS ARE NOT WITHIN A 4-CM CIRCLE. DURING GROUPING AS LONG AS THE FIRER HITS WHERE THE SAFETY CAN SEE THE ROUNDS AND DETERMINE IF THE SHOT GROUPS ARE WITHIN A 4-CM CIRCLE NO ADJUSTMENTS ARE MADE

GROUPING (CONT) WHAT WOULD YOU DO NOW? COMPLETE MISS HAVE THE FIRER SHOOT AGAIN WHILE YOU WATCH THE FIRER TO ENSURE HE OR SHE IS FOLLOWING THE FOUR BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF FIRING.

MARKSMANSHIP FUNDAMENTALS 1.STEADY POSITION 2.AIM (SIGHT PICTURE) 3.BREATHING 4.TRIGGER SQUEEZE

STEADY POSITION IF A FIRER CAN HOLD THE FRONT SIGHT POST STEADY THRU THE FALL OF THE HAMMER THE FIRER IS IN A STEADY POSITION.

BREATH CONTROL

EXAMPLE OF IMPROPER BREATH CONTROL 1 2

TRIGGER SQUEEZE TRIGGER SQUEEZE IS IMPORTANT FOR TWO REASONS: 1. ANY SUDDEN MOVEMENT OF THE FINGER ON THE TRIGGER CAN DISTURB THE LAY OF THE RIFLE AND CAUSE THE SHOT TO MISS THE TARGET. 2. THE PRECISE INSTANT OF FIRING SHOULD BE A SURPRISE TO THE FIRER.

EXAMPLE OF IMPROPER TRIGGER SQUEEZE 1 2

ZERO TASK: ZERO an M16A2 Rifle CONDITIONS: On A 25-meter range, given an M16A2 rifle from the supported position, 18 rounds of 5.56-mm ammunition, 300 meter zeroing target placed on the standard E-type silhouette, and a sandbag for support while wearing a helmet and LBE. STANDARDS: Each firer must adjust the sights so that 5 out of 6 rounds in two consecutive shot groups strike within the 4-cm circle on the 25-meter zero target.

ONCE THE FIRER HAS GROUPED HIS OR HER M16A2 RIFLE AND THE TARGET HAS BEEN CHANGED HE OR SHE CAN BEGIN ZEROING. WHAT ADJUSTMENTS SHOULD BE MADE? 1 U3 R11

1 ONCE THE PROPER ADJUTMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE THE FIRER WILL FIRE ONOTHER SHOT GROUP, THIS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL 5 OUT OF 6 ROUNDS HIT WITHIN THE 4- CM CIRCLE IN TWO CONSECUTIVE SHOT GROUPS. 2 3

1 2 IS THIS WEAPON ZEROED? YES, THERE ARE 5 OUT OF 6 IN THE 4-CM CIRCLE

1 2 IS THIS WEAPON ZEROED? 3 NOW IS THE WEAPON ZEROED? YES, 5 OUT OF 6 SHOTS FIRED IN TWO CONSECUTIVE SHOT GROUPS ARE IN THE 4-CM CIRCLE
