Penguin feathers are so small and tightly packed there can be over seventy feathers per square inch! The feathers are coated with a special oil which makes them waterproof. Hmmm… I wonder if my feathers are like that?

When swimming in open water, a penguin can swim about fifteen miles per hour! A penguin’s black and white “suit” coloring is used to blend in with the ice at the top of the water so predator can’t see them. Even though I’m blue I am still a penguin.
Penguin wings are much smaller and thicker than those of a flying bird because penguins can’t fly, but they can swim instead. The bone in a penguin’s wing is solid unlike the bone in the wings of a flying bird. The largest muscles in a penguin’s body are in the wings, so the penguins are strong enough to swim.
