Directions: Text Set Activity Individual Participants (10 min) 1.Open to the Multimodal, Multigenre Book Pass in the booklet. 2.Think about the focus questions: How do the texts in the text set relate to the topics of civil responsibility and social justice? 3.Select one text to review. Record the title on the graphic organizer. (QR code texts can be found on the inside of each Jacqueline Woodson text). 4.Within the 10 minute time frame, become the group’s expert on this text. 5.Complete Part One of the graphic organizer: What do you notice about the text? List the theme(s) associated with the text.

Jigsaw Activity (10 min) 1.Each expert takes a turn sharing the information about their text using Part One of the organizer as the framework for the discussion. 2.Listeners record the titles of the books and additional notes about these titles in Part One of the organizer. 3.As a group, reach consensus on a theme that could be used with the text set. 4.Discuss the questions in Part Two of the organizer and take notes on the ideas generated. 5.Choose a representative from the group to share the theme of the text set and one classroom connection.

Multicultural Text Sets, Civic Responsibility, & Social Justice Using Jacqueline Woodson’s books as anchor texts, we developed text sets around elements of social justice. Cappiello & Dawes (2012) –“the power of children’s literature to engage students [and] inspire deep content exploration” through the use of multimodal, multigenre text sets – “texts that vary in modality” including visual, audio, and digital texts – as “a versatile teaching tool for the classroom.” Picower (2012) – Provides a framework for six elements of social justice While not necessary to incorporate all six elements in every unit of study, the elements "build upon each other sequentially, and all should be addressed throughout the year.” By addressing all six elements in the classroom, "students develop an analysis of oppression and tools to take action.“
