What is acceleration Acceleration  is the rate at which velocity changes over time. An Object will accelerate if its speed, direction of motion or both.
Acceleration a change in velocity ( speed or direction or both ) over time –speeding up or slowing down –changing direction moving in a circle is always.

Acceleration Problems

Problem 1 A car starts from a stoplight and is traveling with a velocity of 10 m/sec east in 20 seconds.  What is the acceleration of the car?

Answer 1 10m/s-0m/s = .5 m/s2 east 20

Problem 2 A ball rolls down a ramp for 15 seconds.  If the initial velocity of the ball was 0.8 m/sec and the final velocity was 7 m/sec, what was the acceleration of the ball ?

Answer 2 0.413 m/s² Show equation and how to get the answer.

Problem 3 A car going 50mph accelerates to pass a truck. Five seconds later the car is going 80mph. Calculate the acceleration of the car.

Answer 3 6 mph/s Show equation and how to get the answer.

Problem 4 A ball is rolled at a velocity of 12 m/sec.  After 36 seconds, it comes to a stop.  What is the acceleration of the ball?

Answer 4 -0.33 m/s² Show equation and how to get the answer

Problem 5 A dragster in a race accelerated from stop to 60 m/s by the time it reached the finish line. The  dragster moved in a straight line and traveled from the starting line to the finish line in 8.0 sec. What was the acceleration of the dragster?

Answer 5 7.5 m/s² Show how to get this answer

Problem 6 Toon Train is traveling at the speed of 10 m/s at the top of a hill. Five seconds later it reaches the bottom of the hill and is moving at 30 m/s. What is the rate of acceleration of Toon Train?

Answer 6 30 m/s - 10 m/s = 20 m/s ÷ 5 s = 4 m/s2

Problem 7 Pete the Penguin loves to sled down his favorite hill. If he hits a speed of 50 m/s after 5 seconds, what is his rate of acceleration?

Answer 7 50 m/s - 0 m/s = 50 m/s ÷ 5 s = 10 m/s2

Problem 8 Monster Mike’s truck decelerates from 72 m/s to 0 m/s in 6 seconds. What is his rate of deceleration?

Answer 8 0 m/s - 72 m/s = - 72 m/s ÷ 6 s = -12 m/s2
